Privacy and Security Enable or Disable Core Isolation Memory Integrity in Windows 11

  • Staff
Windows_Security_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off core isolation memory integrity in Windows 11.

Core isolation is a security feature of Microsoft Windows that protects important core processes of Windows from malicious software by isolating them in memory. It does this by running those core processes in a virtualized environment.

Memory integrity, also known as Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI) is a Windows security feature that makes it difficult for malicious programs to use low-level drivers to hijack your computer. It is designed to prevent attacks from inserting malicious code into high-security processes.

A driver is a piece of software that lets the operating system (Windows in this case) and a device (like a keyboard or a webcam, for two examples) talk to each other. When the device wants Windows to do something it uses the driver to send that request.

Memory integrity works by creating an isolated environment using hardware virtualization.

In most cases memory integrity is on by default in Windows 11.

References:

In the most recent Insider Preview builds, Windows will notify the user that the Memory integrity feature is currently turned off so that action can be taken for the user to turn it back on so that their device is as secure as possible against malicious attacks.

You must be signed in as an administrator to turn on or off core isolation memory integrity.

Core isolation memory integrity requires CPU virtualization turned on.

  • Option One: Turn On or Off Core Isolation Memory Integrity in Windows Security
  • Option Two: Turn On or Off Core Isolation Memory Integrity using REG file

Option One

Turn On or Off Core Isolation Memory Integrity in Windows Security

1 Open Windows Security.

2 Click/tap on Device security on the left side, and click/tap on the Core isolation details link on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Core_isolation_Memory_integrity-1.png

3 Turn on (default) or off Memory integrity for what you want. (see screenshot below)

If memory integrity fails to turn on it may tell you that you have an incompatible device driver already installed. Check with the manufacturer of the device to see if they have an updated driver available. If they don’t have compatible driver available, you might be able to remove the device or app that uses that incompatible driver. Otherwise, you can uninstall any incompatible drivers.

Uninstall Driver in Windows 11

Incompatible_Drivers.png

Note: If you try to install a device with an incompatible driver after turning on memory integrity, you may see the same message. If so, the same advice applies - check with the device manufacturer to see if they have an updated driver you can download, or don’t install that particular device until a compatible driver is available.

4 If prompted by UAC, click/tap on Yes to approve.

5 Restart the computer to apply. (see screenshots below)

Option Two

Turn On or Off Core Isolation Memory Integrity using REG file

1 Do step 2 (on) or step 3 (off) below for what you want.

2 Turn On Core Isolation Memory Integrity

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the REG file below, and go to step 4 below.

Turn_ON_Core_isolation_Memory_integrity.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceGuard\Scenarios\HypervisorEnforcedCodeIntegrity]
"Enabled"=dword:00000001

3 Turn Off Core Isolation Memory Integrity

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the REG file below, and go to step 4 below.

Turn_OFF_Core_isolation_Memory_integrity.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceGuard\Scenarios\HypervisorEnforcedCodeIntegrity]
"Enabled"=dword:00000000

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 Restart the computer to apply.

8 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Hello Rick,

Memory Integrity will not turn on with incompatible drivers. :(
Hi Brink. Will pushing the regkey cause any issues to those machines with incompatible drivers? I'd wouldn't want my co-workers to get any additional messages or have some other issues.

It shouldn't, but Memory Integrity will not turn on if there are any incompatible drivers.

I had 4 that HP updated & then i went back and checked again, none were bad so HP said but when i went to see if Memory Integrity could be turned on, nope same message as reported about bad drivers !!! May be old versions and/or HP has not updated them.

I had several .sys drivers listed with different version numbers from old, no longer used, hardware. And some old versions of current devices that were not removed when updated drivers were installed. Doing a search several versions of a couple drivers were found. I only deleted the version that was flagged.

Thank you for responding, Brink. I guess I just don't understand why selecting Dismiss through Windows Security doesn't turn off the warning messages. What's the purpose, then, of the Dismiss option? It seems to be a very temporary setting that Windows refuses to save or remember, so why bother offering it?

Okay, the greatest mystery I have is when I look something up, It never looks like the menus, shown in the tutorial. I Don't get it Windows 11 should be the same menus as all. Look at mine. Not the same format as what is shown in this tutorial.

1672370554807.png

in addition the app does not open from here, Spam them nothing.

SO question is still on the table and NOT addressed by this THREAD. Anyone help?

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

What your screenshot shows is the Windows Settings app. What will be in the tutorial are screenshots of the Windows Security app.

Now it should be possible to open the Windows Security app from Settings, and clicking on each item as you did in the Gyazo video should do that, as should clicking on the 'Open Windows Security' button at the top of that page.

Something may disabling your Windows Security app. That could be a 3rd party AV, either currently installed or previously installed but not fully uninstalled. If so then each 3rd party AV has an uninstall tool available on their website that can remove remnants left behind after a conventional uninstall. If you still cannot open Windows Security then you may need to reset it.

Hello Rick,

Memory Integrity will not turn on with incompatible drivers. :(

For some reason, enabling it through the registry turns it on after reboot. Its greyed out though and managed by your administrator.

Meaning me!:winkt:

That really shouldn't come as a surprise, Intel ceased support for your CPU years ago. Your i5-4300U is a 4th gen processor released in 2013 It has the Intel® HD Graphics 4400. That puts it 2 years before Windows 10 was released and 5 years before Memory Integrity came in with W10 1803.

Intel no longer develops drivers for 4th gen devices, the last available drivers are for Windows 8.1. 6th gen is the oldest generation that Intel currently supports and provides Windows 10/11 drivers.

Glad it helped you. It's no help for my System Two though - that's running 11 on a 1st gen i5 :lmao:

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Yet it runs Windows 11 Pro without issue! To be fair, no one including Intel and Microsoft saw Windows 11 in 2015 when Windows 10 was released.
