Apps Enable or Disable Snipping Tool Auto Save Screenshots in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off automatically save screenshots for the Snipping Tool app for your account in Windows 11.

The Snipping Tool app includes a built-in screen recorder and allows you to quickly take and annotate screenshots, photos and other images with your pen, touch, or mouse and save, paste or share with other apps.

Starting with the Snipping Tool app version 11.2209.2.0, the Snipping Tool will now automatically saves your screenshots by default to the Screenshots folder in the Pictures folder (ex: "%UserProfile%\Pictures\Screenshots") for your account.

Screenshots taken by the Snipping Tool are temporarily cached in the %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.ScreenSketch_8wekyb3d8bbw\TempState folder for the current user.

You may be able to recover missing screenshots from this folder location if they haven't yet been automatically cleared.

Here's How:

1 Open the Snipping Tool app. (see screenshot below)

Snipping_Tool_app_Start_menu_All_Apps_list.jpg

2 Click/tap on the See more (3 dots) button, and click/tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)

Snipping_Tool_Automatically_save_screenshots-1.png

3 Turn On (default) or Off Automatically save screenshots for what you want. (see screenshot below)

Snipping_Tool_Automatically_save_screenshots-2.png

4 You can now close the Snipping Tool app if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

I have it selected to Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping but when I select Fn+prt sc I get the Snipping Tool menu, select what I want snipped but it saves to C:users - Pictures - Screenshots. However, I did change to that location as I don't need screenshots taking up OneDrive space. The OneDrive location under Pictures labeled Screenshots is the default. I just changed the location back to default to see if that was the issue but nope. Regardless, the shortcut key doesn't open to the Snipping Tool if I want a screenshot of my home screen or on screen where the Snipping Tool doesn't work and I have to use Fn+prt sc. I have to snip it, then locate the snip and open the Snipping Tool from the menu if I want to edit it.

UPDATE: Consider it an IT10ID issue. Print screen is fine. I had to turn it on in Notifications. DUH! I will however change the saved location to my local C: users Pictures folder that doesn't sync with OneDrive. Anywhere else including saving to the Desktop, it saves to OneDrive and I don't want that!

Looks like there's a new undocumented feature in build 22624 (and up). Windows + Shift + R now automatically runs Snipping Tool, and saves the results to Screenshots. Upon the first restart of 22624, I got this message. The screen clip is a bit sloppy, as the default capture in ST is not a window.

I found this out because, years ago, I had already allocated Windows + Shift + R to ShareX Capture Region and mapped it to many, many Logitech Gaming Software mouse binding profiles (20+ ea. on 4 PCs), in %localappdata% xml files and individual application profile exports.

Those who have used ShareX likely understand why I don't use the Snipping Tool. I submitted a report on the Feedback Hub: The Windows Insider Program

Window + Shift + R started saving Snipping Tool screen captures to %UserProfile%\Pictures\Screenshots, which is mapped to C:\Users\[user]\OneDrive\Pictures\Screenshots. I managed to disable that function, but the hotkey is still lying there, steaming.

Windows + Shift + S already launches the Snipping Tool. Windows has been around long enough that any new bespoke hotkeys ought to be configurable.

I don't want to disable Windows hotkeys, either, so if it doesn't change soon, I'll remap my ShareX hotkey in Logitech Gaming Software - that may be enough of those xml files that I'll write a batch file that uses fart.exe to do it recursively, both in the %localappdata% and profile export folders. It's in a lot of places.

If you mean, this option (Automatically save screenshots):

That's ST (Snipping Tool) version 11.2209.2.0. That has been released for insiders. If you like it I can share the direct download link here.
OR copy this URL "Get $Snipping Tool from the Microsoft Store"

1- Go to this URL "Microsoft Store - Generation Project (v1.2.3) [by @rgadguard & mkuba50]"
2-
Paste it into the site's search box
3- Select "Fast" (insiders) from drop down menu
4- Hit the "Tik" button!
5- You can see the download link

If you mean, don't have a "Screen Recorder" (Video Recording) in ST. It would release in November 2022 or in January 2023 (I think we can see this feature in November).

The download versions have totally changed since you posted this. There are lots of files with MSIXbundle extension and different versions, some are massive some are small files.

Can you or anyone suggest which one to download currently? I dont want to mess things up. My snippit is really outdated.

Thanks

Why is this one 150+ mb though?
Probably cuz it's a full installer package..., ARM64 and x64appx, plus about a half a million language packs!!!
Once it's installed you can delete it anyway.

Okay thanks, its updated now! 8)

I also found a much easier way afterwards, for anyone who comes across this in the future. Just uninstall the snippet app from apps, then reinstall it from the microsoft store. Its the latest version that way.
