Windows Ready Print is another name for the Windows Protected Print Mode feature. If you enable it, Windows will remove non-compliant printer drivers from the system as a security feature.

This mode might break your legacy printer when it requires an older driver that happens to fail the security check. More recent printers should be fine.

This Windows Ready Print setting will only affect new printers when turned on.

Windows Protected Print Mode below is a different setting that will indeed remove unsupported printers when set up and turned on.

You do get a warning when trying to enable protected mode of what will be disabled.
In my case it would disable my 6230 printer so I canceled.

KevTech, I know this thread is a few months old but I came across your post and wanted to let you know your OfficeJet 6230 is Mopria Certified which means the printer functionality will still work after enabling Windows Protected Print Mode, you’d just have to reinstall it and Windows would automatically assign its inbox IPP driver instead. You might lose scanner functionality though.

I'm not even going to try with my ancient Canon MP990. There's a little dance I have to do with the drivers and the IJ network tool to get both printer and the scanner properly recognized by Windows. Once for printing using Windows to install the printer and then, install another instance using the IJ Network tool to enable the scanner.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26100.8737 (24H2), build 26200.8737 (25H2), and build 2800.2605 (RP 26H1), Microsoft is adding a new toggle in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Default install printers using Windows Ready Print to give you control over this behavior.

I don't see Default install printers using Windows Ready Print but there is the option to set-up Windows protected print mode. Does this tutorial need updating?

Unfortunately, this feature is still listed as a "gradual rollout" starting with these builds.

I don't know what others do, but I would rather avoid any options that affect legacy compatibility. I will make sure both options are disabled, just in case, so I don't lose access to my old printers. Even if I buy a new printer some time in the future, there should be a workaround to install "traditional" printer drivers instead of modern IPP and keep those settings disabled.

Ya I know but windows does not think it is (no checkmark) plus I would lose some functionality of the printer so I am staying with the HP software/drivers.

Basic functions such as print quality settings (“Draft,” “Best,” “Photo”), DPI control, duplex orientation, paper type selection are lost or very limited.

You lose advanced tools like ink level monitoring, printhead cleaning, or the ability to align cartridges.

Functions that are essential to keeping inkjet printers running properly are gone.

IPP driver is a step back IMO.

My printer is connected by USB not wireless even though I know it can be connected by wifi.

Now you see why I insist on official model-specific printer drivers and I don't trust Windows Update. I don't even trust OEM generic drivers like HP universal PCL6. These too are limited for most models.

The Windows official list of printers lists mine as compatible, but when I look in my Printer list, two of my printers are not listed as compatible.

As long as we can disable that setting or we can use Winaero or other tool to restore it, I don't worry. In the past some Vive Tool commands undo unwanted changes to File Explorer so Open Shell Classic Explorer Bar was still working. With build 8117 or higher these commands no longer work but fortunately I discovered a Registry hack that does. For every Microsoft mischief there is a workaround sooner or later.
