Error trying to upgrade to windows 11 from windows 10

Can’t get past the 0xc1900101 - 0x20017 error have tried everything I can find to try. I have a x99s sli msi x99s sli plus motherboard with an intel i7 5930k processor. I have updated all drivers, unplugged everything but mouse and keyboard, did a clean boot, removed antivirus, updated bios, did sfc scan with no errors. Anyone have any ideas what I might try next? Thanks for any help

Scroll down and download WhyNotWin11.exe
Then just double click to run. Please post a screen shot of the results.

If everything is compatible with Windows 11, it will look like this... (all green boxes)
Your CPU will fail this test. I'd like to see if there's anything else.

Ensure that all that drivers are updated.
Open the Setuperr.log and Setupact.log files in the %windir%\Panther directory, and then locate the problem drivers.

Update or uninstall the problem drivers.

0xC1900101 - 0x20017
A driver has caused an illegal operation.
Windows wasn't able to migrate the driver, resulting in a rollback of the operating system.
This is a SafeOS boot failure, typically caused by drivers or non-Microsoft disk encryption software.
This can also be caused by a hardware failure.

Looking at the compatibility list, I'm a little surprised that you're not using EFI and GPT.

Your hardware is officially an unsupported. You need to use a workaround as described in Bypass Windows 11 System Requirements on Unsupported PC

One thing you can do is to convert the Legacy- MBR drive into a UEFI - GPT

Please post a whole window Disk Manager image of ALL your drives. Don't forget to expand the columns so we can read them. How to Post a Screenshot of Disk Management
If you have a MiniTool or AOMEI Partition use it instead or Windows disk manager.

I haven’t switched to GPT because I made a Hiren cd with GPT and could never get it to boot. I’m afraid I might kill my system.
I have tried several workarounds to update. Used rufus and several other methods but no luck. I get to the 100% then first boot, then back to windows 10. I attached the error I get.

You might have mentioned that you were getting a blue screen.

I'm not sure what iaStorE.sys is. Intel RST, maybe?

I've never used Hiren. GPT might kill your system? Never heard of that happening.

Are you willing to try a clean Windows install?

I have thought about doing a full install, but I just hate losing my apps and having to reinstall everything. I guess that would be my next step. Hiren is just a utility that can be used to repair your system. I used it with Rufus to create a boot usb to test if my system can boot with GPT.

Never heard of a GPT CD. To boot as UEFI a drive must have a Fat32 partition with the boot manager.

Your system is probably failing the update due to the drive layout

The MSI motherboard website has drivers for XP to 10 with the newest non-beta BIOS 2016.

It has an UEFI only menu option.

As above it's an unsupported upgrade.

Tried a full clean install but got same error. Went into device mgr and disabled almost everything same error

Your drive layout is OK, only the recovery partition is small

Is your drives set to RAID mode on BIOS?

Open a CMD window as administrator and type:

chkdsk X: /f (replace x with D: G: and K:)

Then chkdsk C: /f
It will say your disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = yes
Restart

Changed from Legacy to UEFI but no change same error. Still won’t update goes back to windows 10 on first reboot.

Unless I'm mistaken the 2 things your system needs for an upgrade from Win10 to Win11 is GPT and UEFI. You can convert your OS drive from MBR to GPT but that still leaves the system without a UEFI boot loader which is required. The only way to get UEFI is to reinstall clean. You can bypass all the other Win11 requirements.

When we ask to do simple tasks as running check disk in all drives we have a reason. Please do it.
