Evaluation expires on….

Hello,

I updated from 26220.7872 (25H2) to 26220.7961(25H2) yesterday and I was surprised to see a watermark at the bottom right corner of the screen said :
“Evaluation copy……” and under System and About said “ Evaluation expires on 8/11/2026”. I never seen this before the updated. What does this mean? Thanks!

Exactly what is written. You have an insider version and that build has an expiration date.
It's uncommon on Betas but it's there on every other branch.
Once you get caught up with the Release version, that watermark will probably be gone.

It means your copy of Windows is no longer activated

Insider builds are experimental test versions of Windows which can be very unstable, Microsoft added this system so users will constantly update to the newer Insider Build, preventing users to stay on unstable Windows builds, once the build expired you will get notifications and warnings to tell you to update to the newer Insider Build version. It's unrelated to Windows being activated or not. I was wrong about that.

After doing some more research it seems that the next things will happen, You will be able to only use Windows for 1 hour and you will be reminded that Windows your Windows is no longer genuine. (acting like you have a illegal copy of Windows)

Thank you for your motivational reply to a person trying to be helpful.
I wrote it myself, I just couldn't find much information regarding this and I was interested in knowing more about it.
There is not much reliable resources regarding what happens when a system running an Insider Build stops being updated other then the user ending up with a 'possibly' unstable system.

It is everywhere nowadays even on Microsoft's own help-desk platform.. Hard to avoid nowadays.

Thank you! I was worried if I missed the expiration date the windows will get deactivated.

It will expire on that date but you will get a grace period and tons of annoying popups telling you to upgrade.
Some functionalities will also be disabled.
