Favorites Icons Disappeared

Edge has deleted all the favicons from my saved favorites list. I've tried some solutions I found online such as simply visiting the page or going to %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default and deleting a couple of files. The idea was that Edge would be forced to recreate those files which it didn't do. I also tried deleting the cached images and files from my browser history, but that didn't work either. So what now?

I had co-pilot analyze your post and it gave a lengthy solution to the problem. It seems you are not alone. Microsoft has been rolling out a new favicon service in Edge, and it has caused disappearing favicons for some users.

I suggest you do this.
WHILE VIEWING THIS THREAD, open co-pilot and ask "edge favorites icons disappeared" You should see a detailed explanation of the cause and its solution. If need be, you can interact and copilot will diagnose your specific profile.
EDIT: Please see my second post below.

I had not noticed that my own favicons were gone until I read your thread. I used this solution that co-pilot gave.

On desktop create a shortcut with target of
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --disable-features=msEdgeFaviconService

Name it Edge test or whatever. Close your current Edge session completely. The run Edge from the icon you created. Your icons should come back (mine did)
Close that Edge session. Then open Edge the way you always do using normal Edge icon. If your favicons come back there as well, you can delete the new shortcut you made.

I tried this method on two of my systems but did not work. What I found did work for me was to go Settings-Privacy-Choose what to clear every time you close your browser-and UNCHECK Browsing History. I restated Edge and all my icon favorites had returned. Hope this helps folks that the other method did not. You can go to Clear Browsing Data Now and clear your history until hopefully Microsoft sends us a fix.

Yes, my icons come and go, and further online research is tied to clearing my browser history upon closing edge. As the latter is more important than the icons, I guess I'll just have to live with it. Thankk you.

its because the favicons are cached, thus clearing certain data at session close purges those cached favicons. visiting the site 2+ times after reopening the browser should rebuild the cache for said site and repopulate the favicon, but they'll be gone once you close the browser and clear data again... unless you can preserve the specific data for the favicons.

Hi Everyone,
I had the same problem ... all of a sudden all favorites favicons turned into globes.
Not that it affected functionality but it just bothered me.
I tried a bunch of suggestions ... Edge update / repair / privacy settings / delete folder in app data/local / re-visit and re-save ...
nothing worked.

Then came the brake though:
I created a new profile (Edge Settings = Profile 2 and imported previously exported bookmarks / favourites (html file as a backup).
At first I saw the same globes but then was able to recreate one by one by visiting the site > delete the old favicon
from favourite bar or other folder > saved the site anew there ... and ... voilà ...
each website shines in favourites with its native favicon.

Now I have two Edge task bar icons with little overlays ...!!??
Just go into edge / settings and delete the old Profile 1.
Now the new Profile 2 is Profile 1 and everything is peachy!!

Hope it helps / works for others

Cheers

Chrome doesn't do that, no matter what data you delete! 🤷‍♂️
