Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) = Control (& Money)

I read that Michael blew up trying to install Linux on his Surface Pro whilst he was in his oxygen tank.

Yes, it’s crazy how companies these days want to make a profit. Whatever is the world coming to?

It isn't so much that as it is changing the rules to where you 'subscribe' to something and pay for it into perpetuity, whereas you used to pay a one-time flat-fee before, and now wind up paying more for it in the long run. And they can always take that away whenever they want to. Hence, it's another big reason why I never use cloud services. I'd be paying them to control my files, not me.

It's all about control (or lack, thereof) and that doesn't sit well with some people around here, myself included. :cautious:

And for them it’s all about profit. It isn’t rocket science. It’s the direction companies are going in. It’s a prerogative they are entitled to. I seen it coming a mile away. Some have done it gradually, some just changed the payment process straight away.

There are alternatives. Opensource has never been more popular?

No debate, there. Doesn't mean have to agree with it. Doesn't mean I have to like it. Doesn't mean I won't register any objections to it here, either.

People do that all the time on these forums...

There are alternatives. Opensource has never been more popular?

Yeah, I'd love for Wine to be perfect and run everything. If that were the case, I'd run to Linux, not walk.

I don’t think the benefit of doubt has anything to do with it. It’s understanding that they are a company out to make profits, they have shareholders, they have the right to do whatever they want to. It 👏 is 👏 a 👏 company 👏
No you don’t have to like it. Respect!

So what.

I don't care about their profits. I do care care about my wallet, though.

And that's what counts as far as I'm concerned.

I don't expect everything to be 'free'. I don't mind paying reasonable fees, but I'm not going to be price-gouged, either.

And instead of taking Microsoft's position (that you present) always into consideration, maybe they should start taking some of their home users into consideration, instead. That way people won't have to look around for ways to run Windows 11 on unsupported hardware all the time.

For Microsoft?

Depends....

    …still on a horse.
Adding some definitions, as much derailment occurred in this thread:

1. OP is not a EULA debate, but let's see if more words help. When I say "you own the OS", this is meant to relay:
- you own the license that you paid money for, and can use that license forever.
- you own the "build" (how you built the OS on a PC/LT). You can choose to accept a "default" install, which might have update issues, privacy issues, forced advertising, or other such activity, but you are not required to have a default install by the EULA. Or you can use stripped-down versions, debloated versions, etc.
- AFAIK, there's nothing illegal in my interpretation of EULA's, and my intended use of the software. I've read the silly things from start to finish, and don't believe I'm violating a software vendor's EULA; however, many of these long ago passed out of the realm of light reading, and into incomprehensible status.

2. one OS, one PC (or you could have multi-boot, or virtualization, or ...):
- if you desire only one OS on your PC, and can't imagine any benefit from multi-booting or virtualization, more power to your choice. No need to bash others who make a different choice, on their *personal* computer ... they might see benefits from other methods.
- my preferred choice of operation is not a single OS on a PC, nor multi-booting. It is virtualization in this form: Host-OS that is stripped down and near immutable; Type-2 hypervisor(s); One or more VM's for daily work, for testing, etc.

Hope this helps ...

I guess for me, end of day, is that I don't really know anybody who thinks that when support expires that they have to throw out their old computer, stop using it, and immediately upgrade to something else. They might feel that it's a good idea to upgrade and get something that is supported, but I don't think they feel like they absolutely have no choice whatsoever in the matter.

I doubt MS is that bothered about your opinion LOL.

Well you seem to. I've got your attention so that's good enough for me. 😉

lol

Nobody is forcing you to use MS products.

Yeah, I've heard that canned answer before. Many times....

What you call a philisophical difference, I call it whinging.

No, I still call it a philosophical difference.

What you really don't like is my attitude about it, and that's fine. You don't have to. Perfectly understandable.

Good luck with whatever you’re on about (y)

Thanks. You do the same. 👍
