I have a new Dell Inspiron laptop and am trying to run Windows File History. I have 3 external drives (ssd), all of which work fine as a storage device when connected to the computer. But - with each of them - when I try to run File History, I get the message that File History doesn’t recognize the drive. The computer works. The drives work. Apparently File History is the culprit. Any guidance as to how to fix this will be appreciated. Thanks.

stop the service:

disconnect the drives

delete the following folder:
Code:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Configuration

reconnect the drives

start the service again

reconnect file history to the drives

If I leave the external drive connected, with freefilesync running, will changed and new files get backed up automatically? Or would I have to do something manually?

Just information, I have a 256GB NVMe M.2 drive in a Sabrent USB case. I can use it by turning File History on in the Control Panel. The drive itself is a rescue from a junked Notebook and is formatted as FAT32. Once I turned FH on it did the job, took less than 10 minutes as I don't store much on the Notebook.
