In the process of moving my Windows 10 C: HDD to my new Windows 11 PC as an E: drive, I somehow managed to erase some files. I also had an external HDD from which I deleted the File History folder (I know, who would do something like that?) In any event, now when I open File History on the Control Panel of my new C: drive I get the following notice:

When I try attaching the external drive (H:, which no longer has a File History folder), I get the same message.

Assuming the files are gone, I would simply turn off FH, then try to turn it on again.

Unfortunately, when I turn it back on I get the same error message. If it makes any difference, the file I deleted was $OF. From what I've read, that shouldn't have caused the problem.

The $OF folder does not only contain files that are created by File History , it also hosts those with a path length greater than 256 characters.
'OF' stands for overflow.
I do not know where you read it was OK to delete it but surely, you have a backup that will restore your files.

Try turning FH off, then select a different drive (maybe temporarily), then back on. Do you need access to any of the files that were in FH, or just want to start from scratch?
