You can get rid of that. The "buzzing" is the cooling system of the laptop. It is really important for the performance of the laptop.

To be fair, Those temps arent bad id say for idle considering its a laptop, 60 degrees also isn't that hot for a laptop i dont think either, Put it into retrospect, My 10700k under 100% can easily touch the 80's Albeit it doesnt sit on my lap

If you are just typing, it shouldn't get too hot. If you are playing games or watching videos, that's when things start to heat up and it's just normal.
If you are planning to get HP Pav DM4, forget about Windows 11 then.

Yes they're not too bad on paper but the metal casing is incredibly hot. As I mentioned earlier, I've used laptops that have got up to 90 degrees but don't get so hot on the outside. Maybe because they had a plastic base rather than metal.

Hi,
One bad thing about coretemp is although it shows max temperature reading
It does not show max frequency so max temp is hard to say if it's good or bad.

This is why hwinfo64 comes in handier
Reminder check sensors only on the popup message and okay on the second popup.

Metal is better for heat dissipation. I don't understand how you can use a laptop on your lap. It will hurt your neck and back big time.

I do it all the time - sitting back in a nice comfy armchair, back well supported and the laptop on my knees. Keyboard/touchpad is comfortable arms length and screen is only just below eye-level.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

I know next to no one will agree with me but I've always felt laptops have too many compromises. I like a mouse, a big keyboard (that costs pennies to replace), a nice big screen.

If you agree that tablets have too many compromises compared to laptops -- now you know where I'm coming from.

I can't take being tied down to one single place with a desktop system. I need mobility. I also need power. My System One below is more powerful than any desktop I ever owned. And it has two screens!

Exactly :). And if you semi lie on the sofa with your knees up then the screen is the right height. I personally get more discomfort sitting at a desk.

My first experience with a portable computer was back in the 70's and it took six of us to move it
But back on topic ...

I have been using my Dell XPS 17 for around 5 hours today - and have been updating a selection of large Image processing software just took the external temp on the alloy base (using an IR measuring device) and it was sat at 91.5 F (33C) so was comfortably warm but not dangerously so

Just checked and the max processor temp is 44C, [111F]

I think it’s something to do with it being metal and thin. Any laptops I’ve had before have been hard plastic underneath - and while I have had some get extremely hot (eg and old vista one couldn’t handle Windows 7 without overheating) - never to the point it has been painful!

The seller wants me to claim on the warranty. The warranty does sound genuine (from John Lewis). While I only have a screen shot with the original order number, I could call John Lewis and check - hence I think the warranty is probably genuine.

However if they did send it off, that then leaves me with no laptop for ages. So I still think the seller should take it back and sort it out themselves.

My XPS is a mix of Aluminium and Carbon Fibre for the shell and I took the temperature from the hottest part of the alloy base - where it would sit on the legs of a person using it on their lap.

The problem with an original seller warranty is it would not normally be transferable to a second owner. also if the fault was covered by the warranty, why would the seller sell it for less than they could recover from using the warranty system ?

That would be my concern
