Firefox won't update shortcut icons

Does anyone know a trick to force these type of shortcut icons in firefox to refresh and grab the correct favicon from the corresponding site?
I can visit the sites over and over and they never want to update yet some sites work just fine.

I am getting the same with Safari. Eleven Forum domain is showing the correct favicon, but sometimes it is showing the Facebook favicon. I suspect clearing my cache would fix it but don’t want to yet.

I’ll take a guess, if you remove those offending icons (links) from the Firefox landing page, clear your cookies history and cache etc, restart Firefox, go back and re-add the sites to your Firefox landing page, it might show the correct Favicons.

The ones you currently have are Google or Firefox generated with the first letter of the link name representing the link (E & M)

Firefox should pick it up, mine does. But if you hover over the tile and click the ... three dots menu....

...then you can edit the shortcut to add a url for a custom image.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Correct, that much I assumed.



Ironically the icon for this site just updated on its own with out any interaction on my part

but there are still others that will not update and I was hoping not to have to find each sites URL to its icon to then manually do them one by one when this is something that FF is supposed to be doing for us.

clearing the cache does not seem to help the issue

Does anyone know if these images are stored in places.sqlite OR is there some other file that I could delete and force FF to re-create them all?
Needless to say deleting places.sqlite is sort of a non-starter here.

I make regular snapshots of my places.sqlite so even if there was some sort of SQL command that someone could suggest I would be willing to give that a shot I just don't know what that SQL command would be. BTW FF = 123.0 (64-bit)

It can take some time. Pressing F5 to refresh the New Tabs page sometimes helps, or Ctrl+F5 which is a forced refresh. Also, setting a custom icon, then deleting it can also trigger it to update with the correct icon.
