I don't have the option in the drop down even if i turn the AI grammar checker on it just works after i do.

For some reason my Firefox spell checker didn't work out of the box i had to add the spell checker below along with the other 385,861 people who have installed it, as you said colour would not have been highlighted as it is the correct spelling here but color should have been (in the text box below) which it wasn't.

I've never had a lick of problem with the spell check, and I've been using Firefox for at least fifteen years on a variety of platforms, Windows and Linux.

Inaccurate according to who? Various sources have FF in the 140M to 160M users.

One reason Chrome has a lot of users is it's installed by default on a majority of all boxed computers.

Here are two examples the first is with the language tool turned off and the spell check settings in the bottom two pictures as you can see no highlighted words the second is with the language tool turned on, all words highlighted.

As i said in my earlier post its not the first time this has happened and its on different PC's how many people have been put off the browser because they cannot be bothered trying to get it to work.

Earlier someone said the spell checker should work out of the box i said it didn't for me and demonstrated the problems i was having, i had to add the language tool to get it to work it was suggested it may be my pick of language (see above) which it wasn't, so to get it to work you need to add a dictionary it doesn't work unless you do.

So to go back to my original question and the point i was trying to make, why are the dictionaries not installed when you download the browser people will be put off if they have to start searching for a solution to the spell check not working all other browsers spell checking works without the user having to add stuff why not Firefox?

Well, you say the dictionary thing has been suggested, but you refuse to show us whether you have a dictionary installed for your locale, but you're willing to show screenshots of irrelevant things.

I installed an en-GB Windows, and an en-GB Firefox, and the spell check works.

Hi folks
I'm confused as to why one would want a spell check in a web browser -- most search engines are sophisticated enough to know if you are looking for something and mis-spell the item and return the correct query.

Usually - at least the people I know use web browsers for RETRIEVING data from a web site and any forms etc presented to the user are checked by the relevant target / destination website e.g valid Bank sort code etc.

Spell checks are fine for office type stuff - word, power point etc or e-mail but I can't conceive of another use in a browser -- perhaps I've missed something here - so I'd be glad of a bit on enlightenment.

The spell checks on this forum alone when posting in any browser seem to work pretty decently !!! Whether it uses the basic browsers built in facility or there's extra software on the Forum who'se to say -- I certainly haven't added any extra dictionaries or whatever to the default firefox install (or konqueror - the Linux built in browser for the KDE desktop).

How about when you're posting in an on-line forum like this one? Sometimes my fingers don't do what my brain tells them to do, and having the obvious error underlined makes it stick out and easy to spot.

Yes. I've noticed this too. I'm guessing some techie terms might have been added to the dictionary because many of these won't pass the general scrutiny of standard spell checkers. Whatever the case may be the spell checker on this forum is purty durn good.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
I've been using Google as my Firefox homepage for years, but the Firefox homepage has evolved and is now quite useful and customizable.

IDK anything about their financial situation ATM, but I hope not. I like a choice of browsers and Firefox is my go-to.

I think there's a lot of chicken-little-the-sky-is-falling in this discussion. Until I actually see Firefox disappear, I'm going to continue to use it.

Which means Google will no longer be able to back and support Chrome, either. - - Can one really imagine that's gonna happen? -lol 😄

And who would pick up the reins even if it did?

I wouldn't worry about it. It would have to go through a lot of court action before it even gets to that level.
