Fix for TPM issue.

My ASUS ROG Maximus XI Apex board does not have any support for TPM

Wow.. I didn't think min did but I found it this morning. Motherboard: ASUS Prime B350M-E

Hi OldMike65 (and all others),

Be aware that near all modern motherboards supporting Windows 10/UEFI, will have built in TPM support on the motherboard via a BIOS setting. On Intel boards the setting is called "Trusted Computing", on AMD boards (according to your owner's manual on page 3-18 (pdf)) it's called "PCH-FW configuration". This setting allows you to configure "firmware (built in) TPM.

You can also check for TPM using "TPM.msc" in Run to bring up the "Trusted Platform Module (TPM) Management on Local Computer" module. (At least from Windows 10). The info can also be found under Device Manager under "Security devices"

My motherboard which is the ASUS Apex XI does NOT have any TPM support ..already checked.

My 2nd rig the ASUS ROG Apex X does have support for the TPM ....but its not included when you buy the motherboard, you have to buy the chip separately.

Anyway,., I updated my BIOS and activated TPM 2.0, then I re-flashed my drive with Win 11 dev.. ran the setup and I didn't get any errors. The last time I had to replace a file in the source folder. So.. all fixed

1) install W11 (gen 2 as I wanted UEFI) in HyperV from W10. HyperV allows you to emulate a TPM. It installed and worked fine.


2) close down HyperV and attach the VHDX file natively in Windows.

3) Clone VHDX file using Macrium Reflect (C drive only as I wanted to dual boot W10 and W11) to unallocated space. Reflect assigned drive letter D to cloned partition.

3) create boot entry

bcdboot d:\windows

4) Reboot pc and select W11

I believe you could do similar with vmare or virtualbox if hard disk is in vhdx format.

Update. I'm experimenting using my backup 7 year old Dell laptop. I created a 30GB partition and cloned the .vhdx drive then set up to multiboot with Windows 11 as an option. It all worked fine then Windows 11 downloaded all the drivers needed for my 7 year Dell laptop with no problems. The login delay is minimal compared with my Windows 10 installation but then Windows 11 is a clean install. Note this PC has no TPM.

You don't need a physical chip to get TPM support if the board has firmware support (BIOS) for TPM.

As stated, today's motherboards use firmware TPM (TPM embedded in the firmware (BIOS)) enabled via BIOS vs. having to buy and install a physical TPM module. On Intel boards this is called Intel Trusted Platform. On the AMD board I looked and going by the instructions, they seem to call the feature "PCH-FW configuration". (I can't say it performs the same as Intel, but it does state it controls TPM).

With that, I too don't have a "physical" TPM chip on any of my Intel Motherboards, but with "Intel Trusted Platform" enabled, I have the required TPM solution required by Microsoft for things that require TPM. In short Intel Trusted Platform is a form of TPM.

BTW, I actually had physical TPM chip I bought from Amazon for $19 bucks. The issue was the chip I got was an Infineon chip, which turned out to have a have security flaw. Brink even posted about it in the news section of Windows 10 some years back.

Anyway here's an article detailing Intel Platform Trust Technology vs TPM. Anyway you might actually have something similar but don't know it. That's the point. You can always enable the feature (PCH-FW configuration) and check the places I listed in my first post.

Wonder if I have to buy the physical TPM 2.0 module

I installed W11 on my 7 year old Dell laptop which has no TPM support as follows:

1. Installed W11 in Hyper V and checked for malware
2. Created a spare 30GB partition and cloned the Hyper V W11 .vhdx file to that partition using Reflect
3. Set the new W11 drive / partition as a boot menu option
4. Booted to the W11 drive. W11 then installed all the laptop drivers needed.
5. Activated the installation using the generic W10 key VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T. Whether it stays activated remains to be seen. I checked my W10 installation activation isn't screwed up but it isn't since it still has its original key.

Not familiar with Intel motherboards, but most of the newer motherboards let you choose between Discrete TPM module or "Firmware TPM"

This is from your motherboard manual. You'll need to enable firmware TPM and enable Secure Boot as well.
I would check these settings...

They are under the SETTINGS Menu in the BIOS.





It seems that for most motherboards, aka, the sub $300 motherboards, the TPM module is sold separately.
If your motherboatrd came with a TPM module, it will have been in the motherboard box.

Thanks, the question was more for like future proofing, IF it gets released and I would like to use it on my main pc not VM. right now we chilling.
I'll take a peek into BIOS if I get home.

In the Specifications section for your motherboard at the MSI site, it says you have one TPM header.
So it looks like they will have a TPM module for sale (optional).

But there might also be firmware TPM in those BIOS settings I mentioned.


I did a search on the MSI site for "TPM Module" and this came up....

At that link, click on Overview and read about their modules.
I would think you'll have to contact their tech support to find out which one you might need.

This is just a leaked beta release folks.... when 11 is released I don't think you'll need any TPM enabled or not enabled. Time will tell ..

I'm also reading posts on Google that are saying MS will NOT require TPM support, mainly because of all the older motherboards that don't have any support for TPM. Which makes prefect sense to me.

I tend to agree.. this is a Dev version and intended for in house use so the requirements are different from the one for the general public. Also.. my motherboard is a sub 300 model, in fact it's sub 100, and it has TPM 2.0 support built in. I thought I might have to buy the TPM chip separately but I don't. My motherboard ASUS Prime B350M-E TPM Level and it's 2.0. I was able to easily adjust it in the BIOS...

Not sure why you needed to activate with generic key. My version just activated automatically on host pc when dual booting with w10.

There's not a need but in some cases it did activate base on our MS accounts.
