I want to do a repair update on my Windows 11 Pro system. According to Microsoft's instructions, the procedure is: go to Settings>System>Recovery, find the "Fix problems without resetting your PC," and click the Reinstall now button.

Thee is no "Fix problems without resetting your PC," and no Reinstall now button.

The instructions have advice for this case: "Fix problems using Windows Update isn't displayed."

"If your PC is managed by your work or school, Fix problems using Windows Update might be unavailable."

Nope. I'm retired and not in school. I'm the only person this Windows installation is responsible to.

"The option might also be missing if you’re running a version of Windows that’s earlier than Windows 11 with the 2022 annual update. You'll also need the February 2024 optional update, or a later update installed on the PC."

Settings>System>Windows Update says it last checked for updates 10 hours ago, so I don't think it's that.

And that's all the instructions say.

What else could be wrong?

The first thing we need to know is what actual version of Windows you are running. Version and OS build.

You would normally upgrade to Windows 11 25H2 26200.9168 using the 25H2 Enablement Package, but since you have issues you might want to do an in-place upgrade/repair using the ISO (full upgrade). So download the latest ISO from Microsoft, mount it (Open with File Explorer) and run Setup to upgrade.

I truly do not remember what 24h2 recovery screen looked like. That was almost 2 years ago.
May I ask why are you still on 24h2?

You are calling it a repair update. Do you mean you want to do a repair install? What issues you are having that you feel the need to do a repair install?

Normally I would suggest to apply the enablement package to get from 24h2 to 25h2 but if you have problems with 24h2, you can both repair and get to 25h2 by doing an inplace upgrade.

I have no idea what 24h2 means, and I've never heard of 25h2, enablement package, etc. I gather Microsoft releases new versions of Windows 11 from time to time, which is news to me. I thought they just released updates to fix specific issues.

What issues I'm having: it's almost impossible to connect to the Internet (via Wi-Fi, through an Xfinity router), and once connected, it rarely stays connected for long. My Kindle Fire has no such problems, so I can't blame the router. I have no idea whether repairing software will fix this (or perhaps an inplace upgrade will fix it). I'm going to try that, and try replacing the built-in Wi-Fi with a dongle, and trust that one of those will fix the problem. If not, I will be very distressed!

24h2 was the big 2024 release version of 11 released in Oct/2024. 25h2 was the big fall release of 11 in Oct/2025.There have been monthly updates to 25h2 since Oct. So you are very far behind in keeping Windows 11 current. Now, in Oct of this year, MS will release version 26h2.

Getting to the latest version may help with your wifi problem because there have been a lot of fixes related to wifi since 2024.

If needed, here is the link to the 25H2 Enablement Package...

Scroll down till you see this...

24H2 already has the 25H2 goodies. They're just not enabled.
As mentioned above, you can get to 25H2 by either doing an In-Place Upgrade, or by using the Enablement Package.

Hey Ghot, yes he could get there by installing the enablement package, but if he is having issues with 24h2, IMO An inplace upgrade would be the better option as it would basically reinstall the OS rather than enabling hidden features in an OS that is not working properly. The key factor here will be whether the in-place upgrade will complete or if it will fall back to 24h2.

The instructions have advice for this case: "Fix problems using Windows Update isn't displayed."

"If your PC is managed by your work or school, Fix problems using Windows Update might be unavailable."

Nope. I'm retired and not in school. I'm the only person this Windows installation is responsible to.
Just considering that- it sounds like that's referring to a possible group policy being set.

If either
- you have e.g. a Pro edition (you don't say if you have Home/Pro/Enterprise etc) and you have chosen to set a relevant group policy
or
- you (or some tweak tool perhaps) has made a registry change equivalent to a group policy

then restrictions identical to those which an IT dept in a work environment (e.g.) might set can be in force.
So don't disregard that warning simply on the basis of not being in a work environment.
Windows can not distinguish between the PC being at home or at work, so MS defaults to referring to group policies being applied by an 'organisation'. This confuses home users.

Looks like Windows Update replaced your Wi-Fi drivers with faulty ones. Visit the motherboard (computer) manufacturer support site and download the latest Wi-Fi drivers from there. Installing them should hopefully fix your issue. No need to upgrade to Windows 11 25H2 but why not, as soon as you fix your issue. You might have to block the specific Windows update so it won't replace the Wi-Fi drivers again.

PS: Windows 10 were released twice a year, such as 1903 in March 2019 and 1909 in September 2019. Windows 11 are released once a year, 24H2 is in 2024 second half, and 25H2 is in 2025 second half. 26H2 will be released in October 2026. Note that 26H1 is a special version for specific computers, not part of the standard series.

Reading the previous replies left me with several bits of potentially useful information but no clear direction.

I investigated group policies and found that I'm a member of a bunch of them. They all have generic names that suggest they're standard Microsoft objects, except one which is named after my wife's email account. (Recall that she bought this machine, and I inherited it when she passed away.) I found instructions for finding out who is a member of each group, but none for finding out what the groups do.

So I'm still not sure whether being a member of a group policy might contribute to my problem. (My own opinion: no way, because the problem is difficulty establishing and maintaining an internet connection. Anything in the way of a configuration change should have a consistent effect on the computer's behavior.)

I was left with a sense that I should do the repair install (but I still don't know how, since my computer doesn't display that option) and if it doesn't help (or even if it does) I should upgrade to 25H2.

The problem is not that an upgrade has replaced a manufacturer's driver with a faulty Microsoft driver. I know because I already tried updating drivers from the manufacturer's (Lenovo's) web site. It did update four drivers. It didn't have any effect on my problem.

Hi, noting you've said another device does not have the same wi-fi issues, it might be interesting to see if when using a completely different router you experience the same. If so, you've completely isolated the issue to your laptop. Maybe take it round to a friend's or try it with some public wifi service?

wifi dongles are available for around £6 - just a thought as another trial.

Turning to Windows: have you tried the basics?

1. Fix Power Management Settings
• Open Device Manager.
• Expand Network adapters
• Right-click your wireless adapter and choose Properties.
• Go to the Power Management tab
• Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save
power.

2. Forget and Reconnect Network
• Click the network icon on your taskbar and open Wi-Fi settings.
• Select Manage known networks
• Click your home network and choose Forget
• Reconnect by entering your password again.

3. Perform a Network Reset
• Open Windows Settings {Win + I).
• Go to Network & internet, then Advanced network settings.
• Click Network reset and select Reset now. Your laptop will restart.

Simplest solution for a problematic Wi-Fi adapter is to buy a wireless USB dongle. Cheap dongles are usually 802.11n reaching speeds of 120-150Mbps. If you want greater speed you need a newer standard such as 802.11ac or 802.11ax but these are more expensive. With both Wi-Fi adapters there should be a selection top right of the wireless networks list of which one to use. The wireless USB dongle will be the second adapter. Or you can simply disable the original adapter in Device Manager.

- so you now have two suggestions to do that... but of course fixing the issue, assuming it's not hardware, would be preferable.

Further test: I thought about booting to Safe Mode with networking and checking stability- but Wifi doesn't normally then work as the drivers aren't loaded.

For Wi-Fi to work in Safe Mode it must be enabled before booting in Safe Mode. If you disable it and restart in Safe Mode you can't enable it.
