I really can't understand why so many people still use Ms Access as a "Database" - it's dreadful, breaks easily, runs as slow as molasses and is only single user --i.e it's locked when one user is updating etc.

MySQL (or now MariaDB -- much faster by a million light years, free, multi-user and used even in commercial environments is by far the better choice - and the host db can run on Windows or Linux !!).

Here's a sample data display from the "test employees" data base - available on git-hub - and I'm using a web browser and phyMyAdmin to display data -- not the best way - just a test. On Windows use EXCEL or HeidiSQL to display data.

Why Ms is retiring Publisher (not a bad program BTW -- it's still there in Office 2021 but not in 2024 -- ) and still keeping Access which really IS a load of junk is a mystery to me.

Just my 2 cents, but we are using Access (office 2019) and have 3 computer networkend and have never had a problem using it at the same time.
did we just get lucky the last 5 years?

Who do you mean by people. Commercial companies use a variety of databases suited to their business and needs.

For small businesses, Access is adequate (coupled with a proper backup strategy).

Domestic consumers rarely have a need for any relational database. Many find Excel to be sufficient although not relational orientated.

It is OBVIOUS to me why many use Access. Relatively easy to use, well documented, more iintuitive to use being part of MS Office ecosphere, easy to interface to word, excel to print invoices etc.

Exaggerating speeds ridiculously (a million times faster) does not help people.

There is a mega difference between say a SAP database holding (say) all parts (100,000 plus) and maintenance schedules for (say) an offshore oil platform and a small tyre fitting service with (say) 200 tyres in their database.

The need for more powerful database tools is 100% driven by size/needs.

Horses for Courses!
