By the way, you do not have to quote an entire post.
You can select just those few words that you want to quote, pause for 0.68375 of a second and you'll be given the chance to quote the selection on its own - simply click on the word Quote that appears.

Actually, I just meant that selecting & quoting short bits of text allows you to address the specific statements you want whereas quoting an entire post
- can obscure the point you are trying to make, and
- can put such a large block of unproductve text in the way that people have to scroll down over in order to reach what you have written afterwards.
It's my first chat room in 20 years
And there's nothing to stop you making multiple quotes if that's what helps you say things.

All the best,
Denis

Really? I didn't even know that was an option. I would normally copy + paste, but it seems like you're saying there's a different way?

And as I mentioned “desktop” is possibly just a shortcut that leads to the desktop.
Go into the pictures folder, look for desktop. Right click, properties, it’s probably a shortcut.

Sinto was right. I did create a shortcut. Should have listened in the first place.

We probably were. With so many posts and people posting code, I was getting confused and distracted. I thought I was getting used to how chat flows within threads, but I think I was reading through them too fast. Squirrel! (If you ever saw the movie UP, that reference will make sense. lol.)

This morning I'm looking at how to backup the Registry before editing it. I'm sure Sinto told me at one point, but like a kid with a toy, I forgot where I put it.

But do I need to create a system restore point before backing up the Registry? One article I'm reading says to do that. But a thread in this forum seems to imply not to.

No. There's no link between the two actions. You can decide on them as you wish & can do them in whatever order suits you.

I'm looking at how to backup the Registry
I know about this subject.
You can, for example, use
Reg Export
and
Reg Save
commands to back it up section by section.
Reg - MSLearn
Reg - SS64

I use both methods in my Registry backup batch file.
I imagine you would want to master doing it manually before considering putting it all into a script.

Your 'mistake' was the <target> you specified was simply 'desktop', which when interpreted as a folder and file name becomes just the name 'target' with no extension. It seems the move command expects a full path name (folder and file name).
That's the strange thing. In the examples I looked at beforehand, it looked like they didn't require a full path name, which I thought was odd. But I must have misread it. I'll be careful in the future.

This can be incorrectly written particularly easily if any part of the path has spaces, ampersands or other special characters in it.
If your UserName was Tasmania Green
then you'd have to use " at the start and end of each expression
Move "C:\Users\*****\Pictures" "C:\Users\*****\Desktop"
otherwise the command Windows receives would only be up to that sapce in your username
Move C:\Users\Tasmania
and it would then object to the expected target path being given as the nonsensical 3-part expression
Green\Pictures C:\Users\Tasmania Green\Desktop

The command
move /?
displays the full syntax for your current version of the command.
You can also see the syntax, with some explanations, in MSLearn and in
Move - SS64
[whose explanations are generally much better than those of MSLearn.
But online sources might, without bothering to tell you, show you the syntax as it was for, say, Windows server.

Some commands have evolved significantly. The command netsh, for example, was made into a much more capable command in Windows 10 yet not even now do online guides show the changed version - you are better off using PowerShell for such items now.

Wow, Denis. You put a lot of detail into that post. Sorry I missed it until now. I knew that "" had to be included, but I didn't know they have to surround so much. Okay. Now my mistake makes much more sense.

He didn't move a folder, he renamed a file. Move can also be used to rename.
That I didn't know before this whole scenario. lol. Well, now I'm aware of it.

You can, for example, use
Reg Export
and
Reg Save
commands to back it up section by section.
Reg - MSLearn
Reg - SS64

I use both methods in my Registry backup batch file.
I imagine you would want to master doing it manually before considering putting it all into a script.

Denis
As of yesterday I decided that I'm new enough that I need to wait a while before creating scripts. I need to know how the parts work before building a car. Although, building a car does sound like fun. Now, where did I put that wrench and hammer?

Would I use CMD or PowerShell to run these commands? I don't really understand the difference between the two, to be honest.
