Hi,

Is there any way to fully disable the Widgets app?

I've removed the icon from the taskbar but the app is still running in the background

I used Revo Uninstaller... to uninstall it. Poof... disabled.
Revo has a regular uninstaller, like Programs & Features, and has a specific Windows Apps uninstaller as well.

This is a pic from Windows 10, but I did the same thing on Windows 11.
There used to be about 25 Windows Apps, that came with Windows 10, on this list.

Ok... here's Revo on Windows 11. I've already removed a bunch of Windows Apps.
The ones with the red dots... I'm still checking to see if I can remove them, or not...

Weird... I just checked Task Manager, and Widgets was... running.
So I googled.. didn't find anything, so I searched for widgets in the registry.

First result I found was located... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Dsh

Setting "IsPrelaunchEnabled" to zero, and rebooting... seems to have done the trick.
I don't see it in Task Manager any more.

I believe the 120000 delay = 12 seconds, but I'm still watching Task Manager to be sure.

Well it's been over 12 minutes now, and still no Widgets in Task Manager... so I guess that did the trick.
On a side note... I searched for widgets.* on the C:\ drive and found nothing. Didn't find anything for widgets.exe, either.

I could end up using this method if it sticks and be done with Widgets but for now to keep the weather widget I've gone through and used the Hide feature to edit out "news" sources I don't want, especially all the "entertainment" sources.

In Task Manager, you could also, right click widgets.exe and choose: Go to file location, and get rid of it there... too.

I just go to The Weather Channel website ...for the weather. Put your zip code in, to get local weather.
And for a 2nd opinion I use... AccuWeather

Tried that, and found that I needed permission from System to delete it. Do you see any problem with using Take Ownership for widgets.exe and then deleting it?

I see (7) for background processes (Windows Widgets), all using a bit of memory, so they are active.

Thanks for the second method as well. I have always gone to the Weather Channel website for more info but I do like the quickness of looking at the Widget first in the morning and on Win 10 that was all that was there. The entertainment "news" on the Widgets is most annoying and may eventually provoke me into using the above methods, although for now I've eliminated that nonsense so I'll see if it gets repopulated or not and if the latter then it goes.

I do know that the MS store has a ton of weather apps. How they work on Win 11 or IF they need widgets to work... I don't know.
But you might want to do a search for weather at the MS store.

Don't know. I used Revo to get rid of widgets... OR... when I did the In-Place upgrade from Win 10 to Win 11, the News & Interests which I had shut off in Win 10... stopped Widgets from appearing in Win 11.
Or maybe I just shut it off in settings.
I really don't remember if Widgets even appeared in Revo's "Windows Apps list.

I should have taken a screenshot of Revo before I started uninstalling MS apps. :(


That registry edit though... definitely stops Widgets in Task Manager.

Yea I know, but trying to find a good one and that doesn't have ads or nags for feedback can be tiresome. I'll have to take another look though if the Widgets thing doesn't work out.

Well, I uninstalled "Windows Web Experience Pack", and that got rid of widgets.
I don't know yet, if it broke anything else... I'm gonna check that now.

Interesting. I read the description of that app and Uninstalled it the first day I had 11 (two weeks ago plus), and I haven't seen a thing misbehaving that could credibly be related to that app.

But I still had Widgets until I changed the 1 to a 0 in the reg for IsPrelaunchEnabled.

Well, it removed the Widgets entries from Task Manager.

What about "Power Automate". Did you uninstall that in Revo?

Even more interesting. I uninstalled that app first day and turned off Widgets in Settings and STILL had Windows Widgets in T Manager. Now that I've flipped that reg value, it's gone from T Manager.

Just checked again. Still MIA. Good.

Nope. Don't have Revo. Don't recognize Power Automate as anything I've uninstalled, either.

Just checked. My Edge and Microsoft Store still work, too. Have since the first day when I dumped that WWebExpPack app.
