This is an Explorer problem. In terminal there is no problem in manipulating file in any manner.

Try starting your editing program with administrative privileges, then use it to open the file.

I always have a problem just using group names to assign permissions. Let me use an example:

Say I have a user named "Joe". Joe is part of Administrators. Rather than simply assigning permissions to Administrators, I find that adding the user Joe specifically to the permissions resolves the issue. At least that is the behavior I see in a workgroup rather than a domain.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

We tend not to use the Administrators group for share or NTFS permissions for similar reasons. You don't know if the user is elevated or not, or which privileges that admins might have are currently filtered from the token, etc. You just get wonky behavior sometimes, or behavior you understand but the user may not. For shares and file system permissions, it's more clear to make groups specifically for those things and put users in those groups.

Explorer runs unelevated. Terminal is like Sudo, it can run elevated commands. As for the rest:
