How easy is it to move to Windows 11, version 25H2? As easy as a quick restart if you're on version 24H2! Today, Windows 11, version 25H2 became available to the Windows Insider community, in advance of broader availability planned for the second half of 2025. Get ready for a reset of the 36-month support lifecycle for Enterprise and Education editions and the 24-month lifecycle for Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstation editions!

As easy as restarting: The benefits of the shared servicing branch​

Over the years, you've experienced regular optimizations to the development and servicing of each version of Windows. Your installations are faster, and your experiences are more seamless. That's because combined servicing stack updates (SSUs) with latest cumulative updates (LCUs) have reduced package size by 40%.

One of the most significant improvements that make these benefits possible is the Windows shared servicing branch. This capability applies the same technology used for the monthly update process to the annual feature updates. For you, it's a familiar, fast, and reliable update experience.

This process is called "feature updates via servicing," and the updates are implemented through enablement packages (eKB). An eKB is an update package that helps update a device to the next version of Windows with a single restart that reduces downtime.

Note: Not all Windows versions share the same servicing branch. The first update that used this process was from Windows 10, version 1903 to Windows 10, version 1909. To learn more, download and read the whitepaper Windows updates and the shared servicing model.


Moving from Windows 11, version 24H2 to version 25H2​

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 use a shared servicing branch. Here's what this means for your update experience.

New features we develop for Windows 11, version 25H2 are part of the version 24H2 branch. When the new code is complete, we include it in the monthly LCUs for Windows 11, version 24H2 in a Disabled state. Think of it as having the new feature code slowly staged on devices running version 24H2—yet another reason to stay up to date with monthly Windows updates!

The code remains disabled on the device until it receives the eKB. The eKB changes flags in the staged code from Disabled to Enabled. When you restart the device, the new features become enabled, and you're officially on Windows 11, version 25H2!

To confirm that the update took place, check your version and OS build number in Windows Settings > System > About.

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 share the same source code, with only the additional features turned on. Therefore, there should be no impact on compatibility between the two. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't test, but you can focus your tests on the new features rather than a full complement of OS, application, or device compatibilities.

Moving from earlier versions to Windows 11, version 25H2​

Since versions earlier than Windows 11, version 24H2 do not share the same servicing branch as Windows, version 25H2, the simple update via an eKB isn't possible. The normal feature update process is the best option. Use Windows Update or Windows Autopatch.

For Windows 10 devices or for new Windows 11 devices that you're deploying, first upgrade them to Windows 11, version 24H2 to make the transition to version 25H2 as simple and quick as possible when it's available.

Ive just installed the enablement package and not the ISO file and it shows 25H2,so I guess Im OK with that or do I have to install the ISO too?

I have a socket 1366 rig, still. It worked well with Windows 10! It was upgraded to 12 GB (3x4 GB) in 2020, months after I got my Ryzen 7 3700X.
I have an Extreme 965, which is a very-early sample with suspected errata. No, it's not an engineering sample, in case people are wondering. I also may still have an i7 960 that is a lower-tier, but I thought I saw that it was D0 for the sample.

These chips use more watts than Ryzen, especially with a core OC. Bloomfields are known for hitting well into the 200s (W) with a core OC!

More so, when people OC cores on an i7 920, which I suspect, is because of the binning.

I installed the enablement package on 2 compliant machines and one unsupported machine. All are now 25h2. I did download the 7.2 GB iso and I hope when the MCT for 25H2 is released, it would be a much smaller iso. I made a bootable usb from the iso using Rufus and tested the bootable usb to make sure the usb booted. Rufus, by the way, has been updated today.

when this build is made available for everyone on 10. 14. 2025, I doubt that it will have the same build number as RTM.

Microsoft will not use two different build (26200 these 5 digits) numbers for distribution to OEM manufacturers and the retail for general users.

If Microsoft plans to release 25H2 on October 14, 2025, it may release an OS Build (Build + Rev) version that has already applied the October security update.

Here I am at IoT Enterprise LTSC support until 2034 but probably in 2028 nothing will run on this build anymore, right? Games, drivers, programs won't let you install them before support ends. It's like trying to use LTSB 2016 today, I don't think it even runs Spotify on this version anymore.

The builds are dynamic in that the build number will increase with every Cumulative Update or on every Patch Tuesday.

I know. We are talking about "Build Number" not "Rev Number". Build Number will not increase. "Rev Number" will increase with every Cumulative Update.

Every cumulative update/patch increases the Rev number, not the Build number.

Yes I get it. I was only trying to say that the build, the entire build including the build number and Rev number may not be the same and probably will not be the same as the RTM release of 26200.6584. That is all.

Apparently, the enablement package is working after the latest September updates... All my PC's upgraded without issues.
Gladly surprised, feels lightweight and uses less CPU than 24H2... I mean, they are "the same", but apparently, they are not.

EDIT: By less CPU I mean, not using 1% constantly doing nothing at all... now it's around 0% most of the time in idle, with no background programs working of course...

That's probably the new CPU monitor they implemented in Task Manger. They use the newer CPU usage meter that third party apps like HWINFO use now instead of the old CPU utility that reads higher. Two totally different meters and calculations.

CPU Utility explained per HWINFO:

A note regarding the new CPU Utility reported:
This is the same CPU Utilization as reported by Task Manager in Windows 8 through early Windows 11 systems. The original CPU Usage reported for several years is measured via time-based performance counters, which report the percentage of time the processor is busy. The Utility performance counters measure how much work the processor actually performs. The utility performance counters take into account the processor performance state and Turbo Boost-based enhancements to measure and normalize the work that's being done by the CPU. The CPU Utility values can exceed 100% when under heavy utilization, which is by design and expected. Earlier versions of the Windows Task Manager reported raw values exceeding 100%, which seems to have been later capped to 100% (most probably to avoid user confusion).

I can vouch for the CPU "Utility" exceeding 100% as my newest machine will go to 203% CPU Utility under full CPU load while the CPU "Usage" now used in 25H2 goes to 100%.

Microsoft releases security updates on the second Tuesday of every month. Even if Microsoft updates ISO to October security updates for all users and it will not make a difference. You can still update to the October security update.
