How easy is it to move to Windows 11, version 25H2? As easy as a quick restart if you're on version 24H2! Today, Windows 11, version 25H2 became available to the Windows Insider community, in advance of broader availability planned for the second half of 2025. Get ready for a reset of the 36-month support lifecycle for Enterprise and Education editions and the 24-month lifecycle for Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstation editions!

As easy as restarting: The benefits of the shared servicing branch​

Over the years, you've experienced regular optimizations to the development and servicing of each version of Windows. Your installations are faster, and your experiences are more seamless. That's because combined servicing stack updates (SSUs) with latest cumulative updates (LCUs) have reduced package size by 40%.

One of the most significant improvements that make these benefits possible is the Windows shared servicing branch. This capability applies the same technology used for the monthly update process to the annual feature updates. For you, it's a familiar, fast, and reliable update experience.

This process is called "feature updates via servicing," and the updates are implemented through enablement packages (eKB). An eKB is an update package that helps update a device to the next version of Windows with a single restart that reduces downtime.

Note: Not all Windows versions share the same servicing branch. The first update that used this process was from Windows 10, version 1903 to Windows 10, version 1909. To learn more, download and read the whitepaper Windows updates and the shared servicing model.


Moving from Windows 11, version 24H2 to version 25H2​

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 use a shared servicing branch. Here's what this means for your update experience.

New features we develop for Windows 11, version 25H2 are part of the version 24H2 branch. When the new code is complete, we include it in the monthly LCUs for Windows 11, version 24H2 in a Disabled state. Think of it as having the new feature code slowly staged on devices running version 24H2—yet another reason to stay up to date with monthly Windows updates!

The code remains disabled on the device until it receives the eKB. The eKB changes flags in the staged code from Disabled to Enabled. When you restart the device, the new features become enabled, and you're officially on Windows 11, version 25H2!

To confirm that the update took place, check your version and OS build number in Windows Settings > System > About.

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 share the same source code, with only the additional features turned on. Therefore, there should be no impact on compatibility between the two. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't test, but you can focus your tests on the new features rather than a full complement of OS, application, or device compatibilities.

Moving from earlier versions to Windows 11, version 25H2​

Since versions earlier than Windows 11, version 24H2 do not share the same servicing branch as Windows, version 25H2, the simple update via an eKB isn't possible. The normal feature update process is the best option. Use Windows Update or Windows Autopatch.

For Windows 10 devices or for new Windows 11 devices that you're deploying, first upgrade them to Windows 11, version 24H2 to make the transition to version 25H2 as simple and quick as possible when it's available.

At the moment the Beta channel is on 24H2 (26120), while the Dev channel is on 25H2 (26200). While they may have different major build numbers, they have identical minor build numbers, currently .5761, and the same KB numbers.

Basically they are the exactly the same code, the only difference is that Dev has the dormant 25H2 features turned on by an enablement package.


I multi-boot RTM, Dev, Beta, and Canary on one machine. I'm not an insider, so I used the OfflineInsiderEnroll script for my Insider builds. Once enrolled they get all their updates through Windows Update.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
I kept getting failure to connect type errors. So I will just wait till it comes out on the RP.

Yeah, gotta replace all those PC's being sent to the landfill that could not be upgraded to W11. Should make for spectacular sales and pricing power for manufactures from all the demand. Meanwhile, those that know better will be picking up some fantastic deals on used PCs.

Fortunately, when I did my upgrade in March, my old machine was over ten years old and was showing it's age, so buying new hardware was on the docket in any case. My backup machine was more like 15 years old, but both had been running Windows 10 for years. There are times where upgrading your hardware actually does make sense. ;-)

There's 0 need to send those PCs to "landfill" just because of 25H2 or even any Windows. They are more likely to die because of age and HW obsolesce. I can't imagine using 10+ year old PC for any serious work or play.

What will probably happen with the PCs being sold with Win 24H2 after 25H2 is released is that they will be automatically upgraded to 25H2 when they are first setup. If it was a case of newer and better hardware then the rush would be on for the OEMs to get their new products out before the holiday sales.

That's how it usually works. Release channel to OEM some time before public release and even that in staged.

Gaming is full of AI and will be increasingly more. Even graphics and FPS in games is AI assisted making false frames calculated in NPU processors.

Corporate and government purchases usually take place in the beginning or end of a fiscal year (which can be any random quarter).

Consumer sales are biggest from Black Friday until the New Year, because of how stores have conditioned US shoppers. Unless you're custom ordering a PC, most bundles are planned in advance and the factory increases production weeks before Black Friday.

Everyone works backwards from Black Friday's date (seller -> PC maker -> MS). A lot of tech previews happen in the Spring, but most products don't show up until Fall.

I'm sorry but you're not going to convince me that the OEMs and retailers are going to scrap their old inventory just because of a new version of Windows is being released. Also those Black Friday sales are the retailers opportunity to clear out old inventory to make room for the newer versions.

I doubt they'll have to. I can't imagine that any OEMs or retailers have brand new computers released in the last year or two that don't meet Win11 requirements.
