How easy is it to move to Windows 11, version 25H2? As easy as a quick restart if you're on version 24H2! Today, Windows 11, version 25H2 became available to the Windows Insider community, in advance of broader availability planned for the second half of 2025. Get ready for a reset of the 36-month support lifecycle for Enterprise and Education editions and the 24-month lifecycle for Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstation editions!

As easy as restarting: The benefits of the shared servicing branch​

Over the years, you've experienced regular optimizations to the development and servicing of each version of Windows. Your installations are faster, and your experiences are more seamless. That's because combined servicing stack updates (SSUs) with latest cumulative updates (LCUs) have reduced package size by 40%.

One of the most significant improvements that make these benefits possible is the Windows shared servicing branch. This capability applies the same technology used for the monthly update process to the annual feature updates. For you, it's a familiar, fast, and reliable update experience.

This process is called "feature updates via servicing," and the updates are implemented through enablement packages (eKB). An eKB is an update package that helps update a device to the next version of Windows with a single restart that reduces downtime.

Note: Not all Windows versions share the same servicing branch. The first update that used this process was from Windows 10, version 1903 to Windows 10, version 1909. To learn more, download and read the whitepaper Windows updates and the shared servicing model.


Moving from Windows 11, version 24H2 to version 25H2​

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 use a shared servicing branch. Here's what this means for your update experience.

New features we develop for Windows 11, version 25H2 are part of the version 24H2 branch. When the new code is complete, we include it in the monthly LCUs for Windows 11, version 24H2 in a Disabled state. Think of it as having the new feature code slowly staged on devices running version 24H2—yet another reason to stay up to date with monthly Windows updates!

The code remains disabled on the device until it receives the eKB. The eKB changes flags in the staged code from Disabled to Enabled. When you restart the device, the new features become enabled, and you're officially on Windows 11, version 25H2!

To confirm that the update took place, check your version and OS build number in Windows Settings > System > About.

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 share the same source code, with only the additional features turned on. Therefore, there should be no impact on compatibility between the two. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't test, but you can focus your tests on the new features rather than a full complement of OS, application, or device compatibilities.

Moving from earlier versions to Windows 11, version 25H2​

Since versions earlier than Windows 11, version 24H2 do not share the same servicing branch as Windows, version 25H2, the simple update via an eKB isn't possible. The normal feature update process is the best option. Use Windows Update or Windows Autopatch.

For Windows 10 devices or for new Windows 11 devices that you're deploying, first upgrade them to Windows 11, version 24H2 to make the transition to version 25H2 as simple and quick as possible when it's available.

Whatever happened to "the personal computer". It's not very personal any more! I seem to remember all computers were "personal computers" (ie PC's). Hence the little Asus Eee "PC's". I was later told a PC is a desktop and a laptop is a laptop.

I know it's all commercial and always has been but ........

I'll go as far as to say that a very large percentage of the computers in the major retailers inventory are Co-Pilot+ PCs. They're not going to scrap computers that a Windows update is going to take care of.

Technically a laptop is still a personal computer but they're not exactly easy to customize hence not-so-easy to personalize. This holds especially true at the hardware level. Desk tops, on the other hand, are generally much easier to personalize and customize so I'm guessing this is why laptops aren't considered to be PCs by many.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

That makes sense :-) I didn't own my first computer until 2009 (I'm discounting the Commodore 64 many years before!). I just assumed they were called "personal computers" like "personal organisers"! Back then there were no smartphones - your computer was the only real digital storage for photos and music and documents as well as accessing the internet.

This isn't about scrapping inventory. When a name-brand PC leaves the factory it's imaged with the then-current Windows version. What they don't want happening is if it takes more than 1-2 months before it ends up in the user's hands (from a bricks & mortar store), that the first thing Windows does is take forever to self-update when it's powered on. That's a negative experience.

Are there clearance models being sold by retailers to clear out inventory? Sure. Unless you're a budget purchaser, you're looking for the newest PC model to replace the one you have now. And most people get convinced by holiday sales or the need to feel good about starting a new year, instead of buying a PC earlier in the year.

I don't have to convince you. I'm just explaining the rationale of why the Windows release schedule is structured this way that RTM/GA ends up in the October timeframe. It's like why movie blockbusters are scheduled in a year in advance on major holidays.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
I have photos and videos on both smartphone and computer and so it's got confusing ha ha. The result has been, my computer photos used to be organised and in folders under topics and years. They still are, but haven't been updated for a long time and photos are now all over the place - phone, camera and computer. It added an additional job - moving things around. I think today's generation mainly keep everything in the cloud or on social media and their phone. They can upload to youtube or instagram direct from their phones.

My Videos folder hasn't been updated in years - its an archive now. I haven't put the music files back on the computer for years - they're all on external drive and that folder is empty (made it easier with doing backups as well). I mainly just use documents and downloads now.

Music can be streamed or accessed in many places and people seem to use spotify - does anyone else still keep music on their computer? All these apps though are not like permanent storage. Whereas folders on a computer store files permanently. If they're backed up!

I keep all my photos on my NAS with mirrored drives. The NAS also has a separate USB drive where it creates periodic backups of the NAS contents. Finally, I keep a backup of the photos on one of my data drives on my main system.

We really need to go through the photos, right now the folder has 150GB of photos and videos! :eek1:

I don't see how this helps me arrange photos. My problem is there are 52,941 graphic Files in 671 Folders. What needs to be done is to step through and get rid of the duplicates where five or six shots were taken and just keep the best one. A file catalog program ain't gonna' do that! :LOL:

26200.5074 25H2 Installing now. Installed, a very short installation through Win update, no trouble. Oddly enough, after asking about 25H2 the other day, today when I installed 26100.5074, immediately after, I noticed that WU was dinging me on the systray, so I opened Settings/Windows Update and there it was, ready to install--25H2 26200.5074!

It appears that the only difference between 26100.5074 and 26200.5074 is the 25H2 enablement package...;) So I'm now on 25H2 and everything is fine, so far!

Thanks for the posts on 25H2 I got--I wasn't expecting to see it offered on the RP channel today!

Great New system. Exceeds my expectations by quite a bit, btw. I love the USB G8 SoundBlaster, it's quite an improvement over the G6!
pull the 11 25h2 image I can't calibrate properly on the TV, even putting contrast at maximum it's not as good as it was in older versions even using the latest driver 392.68 on my gtx 570

Guess Microsoft is starting to roll 25H2 out , it was just offered to me this morning . Download, installed, reboot back to desktop was less than five minutes.

Co-pilot is optional software, regardless of your version of Windows. I choose not to install it, and never have except to look at it once, and have no problems. But if you want it, you can install it and it does not require specific hardware. The "NPU" stuff is just marketing. Co-pilot runs fine on my NPU-less hardware (tried it once) but I don't use it. So far, the intelligence between my ears has proven vastly superior...;) I do not foresee this changing.

I have it uninstalled at the moment as I don't use it, but I thought the copilot PC's have it built in? Or is it still removable? I read something the other day about MS having to ensure some built in apps were removable for Europe, to comply with European law? Hence apparently Edge is now removable as well.
