Solved Graphic issues black/blue/orange screen with occasional need for a 10 sec power bottom shut down

OS
Windows 11
I have a PC with two Windows 11 OS on two separate SSD (one for work and one for game). I started to have graphic issues like green dots on the work drive and occasional black screens (or other colors) that sometimes would recover and sometimes lead to a completely non-responsive computer. The work OS now becomes non-responsive each time I try to log in. The graphic issues also happens at the log in where I choose either of the two OS. If I choose the game OS and wait for a little time before logging in it can become non-responsive; however, if I log in fast enough, everything works - I can play for long times with CPU and GPU working very hard without any graphic issues. The only issue with the gaming OS is that some times when I shut down the game OS, it never shuts the computer down and I have to do a 10 sec power bottom shut down.

My question is do people think this is a virus in the BIOS or a component error like the PSU (750W) or my graphic card (NVidia 2070)? I would like to rule out the 'virus' before starting to buy a new PSU or graphic card. Since the SSD with my work is not working anymore I disconnected the SSD from the PSU and motherboard but the error is still occurring.

Any suggestions is very much appreciated!

If I try to do the automatic startup repair I get the following error: SrtTrail

Boot critical file c:\efi\microsoft\boot\cipolicies\active\{cdd5cb55-db68-4d71-aa38-3df2b6473a52}.cip is corrupt.
Repair action: File repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x57
Time taken = 1297 ms
Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x57

The only Error that might be informative under Event viewer/Administrative Events are 4 nvlddmkm (source) Errors. I am not sure this is important.
1) The description for Event ID 0 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
\Device\Video3
(1) UCodeReset TDR occurred on GPUID:100
(2) Resetting TDR occurred on GPUID:100
(3) Reset TDR occurred on GPUID:100
(4) Restarting TDR occurred on GPUID:100

Thanks very much.

Thanks I didn't think about that. I have been in the BIOS a lot lately and I have never observed any graphic issues. Any good ideas about how to combat the 'virus'?

I don't think it's a virus. I think it GPU related. Do you have the newest Nvidia drivers installed on both OS(released within last 2 weeks)?

1. Download latest drivers applicable for your GPU and OS.
2. Disconnect from the internet to block windows update from interfering with DDU and install of new driver.
2. Use DDU to completely uninstall current drivers and Geforce software . Run DDU in safe mode and follow the instructions carefully.
3. With internet still disconnected, boot in normal mode and install new drivers.
5. reconnect internet.

CORRECTED to add link.

You should also execute bellow commands one at a time from Command Prompt.

Code:
Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Sfc /scannow

Thanks I have been doing the sfc /scannow very regularly and also been doing the image / restorehealth

However, @glasskuter I think you are right unfortunately it is not working for me. I downloaded DDU logged back in in safe mode without internet and ran DDU and restarted the computer. Everything is fine. But when I then install the newest Nvidia driver (without being connected to the internet) the screen goes black as normal and comes back and then right after finishing the installation it goes black again and mostly stays black (I did it three times - safe mode uninstall using DDU restart install Nvidia without internet connection and bang the problem is back). Any ideas? Could it be my graphic card. Btw my game OS is now also dead - the screen goes black shortly after logging in so updating it seems to make it worse even though it had the newest driver earlier today where I at least still could use my gaming computer. Any suggestions is very much appreciated, thanks

As @FreeBooter said you can run DDU again which removes all drivers, and then install an older driver manually or you can reconnect to the internet and run windows update which will install one for you. In the meantime until you can work this out you can rely on the Intel Integrated 630 graphics if you have to. This is the list of drivers on Nvidia's site. As you can see they've been throwing out new drivers every month for some reason. I suggest you work on one OS at a time until you can get it stable. I am afraid that your graphics card is damaged. This usually can be fixed by a technician who will heat the Nvidia chip and repair any loose connection. If it is rather old, you might consider to replace it.

Try older versions of the graphic card driver or beta version from graphic card manufacturer website.
i would suggest that as well. Recently I had a few screen related issues with AMDs drivers and had to revert back to drivers that were 2 versions old else my PC froze and all kinds of things.

Thanks all. The card is more than 2.5 years old but I bought it used. It has nevertheless been fine until now. I will try the beta version or to roll back a few versions. Right now the computer becomes non-responsive so fast that I can't check the version under manager. I did install the driver in normal mode, only the DDU was done in safe mode. Will update when I get home from work. (I am focusing solely on the game computer - the important part 😉)

In case it is a software issue, I would boot in safe mode, use DDU to remove any old drivers and then go to Device Manager, Display Adapters and manually set the driver to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. This will prevent the system from crashing until proper drivers are installed. Also Windows Update should not attempt to upgrade the drivers and mess things. Then restart in normal mode, try your old drivers and see if they work. To prevent Windows Update replacing your working driver use Windows Update Show/Hide Tool to hide (block) any driver update.

Like I said, use the integrated graphics while you get the drivers worked out on the Nvidia. There is a setting in bios to choose dedicated, integrated, or auto. If it's set to auto, you should have graphics output directly from the mobo automatically. Just move your cable. If it's on auto, windows update should have already installed an intel graphics driver that will work.

I changed the BIOS from PEG to IGD (do not have the auto option) and downloaded 472.12-desktop-win10-win11-64bit-international-whql and also tried 512.77-desktop-win10-win11-64bit-international-dch-whql. Everything is fine in IGD but in both cases when I switch to PEG in BIOS and then log in again the problem is back. Guess it is a bad 2070 card?

I did a web search for 'NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 problems'. It seems you are not alone, 2070 and 2080 have a lot of reported problems that vary across the board from not accepting updates, black screens, crashing games, overheating.

I've been following a number of BSOD and crash threads on this forum and each user has one of those same GPU.

Sell the card for as much as you can and buy a new generation model.
