Hasleo Backup Suite

Yes, I totally agree!
When they do introduce their paid version, the free version will be deprecated.
As such, grab it when it has more or less stabilized. Install it and create a rescue disk for future use.
It is now already quite good. That tells me any upgrades in the coming paid versions will be minor or just window dressing.
I disagree with using a deprecated version as it is no longer supported thereafter.

This is exactly the same reason why many choose not to use Macrium Reflect Free / V8 any more albeit they still work fine now.

At some point, MS could make a Windows change that breaks a deprecated version.

That happened once on an Insider version breaking Macrium Reflect a few years back BUT as Reflect was still supported, fix was issued the bypassed the Windows bug that was introduced. Proper support is key factor for image backups whether product is free or paid.

Of course, one should not put all ones eggs in a basket and use a single image backup tool.

That's one business model - adopted/used by Macrium.

BUT, most companies prefer the "Free Limited Edition" businesses model. For example Veeam (Free) Community Edition - still gets updates and extra features - they even removed some limitations from older versions - to compete with current free backup solution (trying to maintain their user base - despite using the free product - that's still " FREE MARKETING" since they can introduce new clients in the future - while appreciating and being used to this specific app).

Core Limitations of Community Edition

The main limitations of Veeam Community Edition compared to the paid versions:
  • Workload Limit: You're limited to protecting 10 workloads. A workload can be a virtual machine (VM), a physical server, or a workstation. In some cases, a single Veeam Universal License (VUL) instance can cover multiple physical workloads (e.g., 3 workstations or 500GB of NAS data). Once you exceed this limit, additional backup jobs will fail. Since the Community Edition provides 10 VULs for free, you can back up up to 10 workloads or up to 5 TB of NAS data (10 VULs × 500 GB). If you mix workload types, the 10 VULs are shared among them.
  • Limited Cloud Support: Community Edition does not support backing up or copying backups directly to cloud object storage (like AWS S3 or Azure Blob) or using Veeam Cloud Connect for off-site backups, which are key for implementing a 3-2-1 backup strategy for disaster recovery. You can, however, restore from backups already in object storage.
  • Reduced Features in Veeam ONE: If you use Veeam ONE (Veeam's monitoring and reporting tool), the Community Edition is limited in its functionality. It restricts advanced reporting, capacity planning, and detailed performance analysis, which are fully available in the paid version.
  • No Professional Support: As a free product, Community Edition does not include access to Veeam's professional technical support. You'll have to rely on community forums and online resources for help.

Comparison with Paid Editions

Paid editions of Veeam, like Veeam Data Platform Essentials, are designed for small to medium businesses and scale up the capabilities significantly:
  • Scalability: Essentials offers protection for up to 50 workloads, and higher-tier licenses provide even greater scalability with no workload limits. This is the primary difference for businesses that need to protect more than a few critical machines.
  • No Centralized Management: While you can back up individual machines with Veeam Agents, the Community Edition lacks the centralized management capabilities that are essential for larger environments.
  • Advanced Features: Paid licenses unlock premium features such as direct backup to cloud object storage, backup copy jobs, and full Veeam ONE functionality for comprehensive monitoring, reporting, and capacity planning. These features are critical for maintaining a robust and compliant data protection strategy.
  • Support and Licensing: Paid editions come with a choice of support tiers, ensuring you have access to technical experts for troubleshooting and assistance. They also use a flexible Veeam Universal License (VUL) model, which allows you to transfer licenses across different workloads (virtual, physical, or cloud) as your infrastructure evolves.

Hasleo might chose follow the free limited model - if they reach a point where they see their software as a worthy competition for all the other premium/paid backup solutions. But so far, Hasleo has positioned "Hasleo Backup Suite" as a completely free product, even for commercial use. This makes it stand out from competitors like AOMEI Backupper or MiniTool ShadowMaker, which have a tiered freemium model.

That being said, if Hasleo Backup Suite is truly 100% free, what is their business model? The answer lies in their other products. Hasleo is the same company as EasyUEFI, and they have a suite of other paid software tools. Their primary revenue streams likely come from Other Paid Software:

Hasleo Data Recovery: A tool for recovering lost files from various storage devices.

Hasleo WinToUSB: A utility to create a portable Windows installation on a USB drive.

Hasleo BitLocker Anywhere: A tool to manage BitLocker encryption on Windows Home editions.

EasyUEFI: Their flagship product, which is a powerful tool for managing EFI/UEFI boot options, which is a highly technical and niche market.

Marketing and Brand Building: By offering a genuinely free and powerful backup tool, they build a strong brand reputation and gain a large user base. When users are looking for other utilities—like data recovery or disk cloning—they are more likely to turn to a brand they already know and trust. The free backup suite acts as a highly effective, low-cost marketing channel.

They would have liked to patch v5 too, but the codebase was just too old...

We caught the issue in a preview build, releasing a fix for both v7 and v6. ... Unfortunately, the age of the v5 codebase prevented backporting the fix.

There will probably be a free and paid version in the future. That's probably a good thing if we want to see it continue. My guess is that it'll be a perpetual license though.
I have changed my mind about Hasleo Backup Suite being forever free. It is such a good piece of backup software that Hasleo deserves some sort of payment for it. But only if it is a one-time payment and not a subscription mode.

Short of testing it, I cannot see any winpe type boot drive functionality so you can restore if OS drive has failed or corrupted.

Even going back to early imaging tools like Norton Ghost, a winpe (or linux based) drive was essential.

This tool looks so basic that it is not worth bothering with when there are a number of fairly basic free reputable tools (AOMEI, Easeus, Hasleo to name a few).

I might test in in a vm.

Edit 1: it has a portable version but I do not know if the operates outside of Windows.
1758127504796.webp

Edit 2: just tested it in a vm - very slow and produces a zip file containing a single file .raw file that is the same size as the vhdx file (100 GB). As far as I can tell the .raw file is just a copy of every byte in the drive (does not care about partitions). Zipping file reduced size by 2/3rds approx.

So, a restore would just write every byte back. It is kind of like a forensic backup.

As it works only from Windows, I do not know how a backup/clone would work without a volume shadow copy?

The portable version still needs Windows.

As a general purpose image backup tool, it is a pile of crock.
As a cloning tool, I guess it would be just about ok (but no flexibility i.e. target drive would have to be as large as source file).

I reckon you could only restore images if OS drive has failed using (say) a Windows To Go Drive with the tool installed in that as there does not seem to be any Winpe functionality. Anotherr solution would be a dual boot pc provided second OS was on a separate drive to failed primary Host OS.

About the only possible redeeming feature is that it (allegedly) can clone even if there are damaged sectors (apparently if it cannot read bytes, zeros are written to backup). So grudgingly, this tool could be useful if a drive was failing, given that most imaging tools would fall over.

IMO - this tool is PANTS - don't bother.

I don't think that's how subscription services operate.
By design and in my experience, generally it's either subscription or per version one off. So version 1 then v1.1 1.2 1.3 etc. until you get to v2.0 which usually instigates another one time payment if you want to move forward.
Stardock is good at this.

But I agree, Hasleo has done well to build its user base. I'd say they'd be pretty happy by now and are gearing up for sub payments. Of course, in my opinion.

I'd pay a small sub for Hasleo.

    …still on a horse.
I have been using Hasleo for about a year now, and it has been both quick at backups, and reliable at recovery (from within Windows, or from repair disk). If, when it does go to a paid version, I just hope it isn't subscription based too.

So version 1 then v1.1 1.2 1.3 etc. until you get to v2.0 which usually instigates another one time payment if you want to move forward.
I am ok with that as well.

Weird scoring (72%, 83%, 87%, 93%, etc - as if rolling the dice on a random percentage generator).

Anyway, where did all this back-up tools appear and.... why, what's the point?! Different brand, different UI but most do the same thing - not really standing out. Also the naming... MultiDrive. Googling, you'll find app for connecting with your car, a 2D - 3D driving simulator.... all with same name.

Hasleo Backup Suite V5.4.2.5 Released!
Thanks for the update. (y) The latest version I had was v5.4.2.1. Will download this version and install it over the old one. (Will automatically deinstall the old one)

One of the very nice features I found out now (They don't tell you in depth what has been changed. (You mentioned it) I found it out at this page with some more info; Hasleo Backup Suite Free 5.4.2.5) that you can mount a saved image (you must change the driver letter to mount it.) so you can browse through it files and copy them in order (if you had a new install) back to the new installation. I previous did that by browsing though the image itself and restore files to an other location. The root of the directory had always a distinct name; [C+] <Name of the drive> (NTFS)/path/filenames. A second copy was necessary to move the content to it's new location. Now it can be done in just one move. Previous before a save I moved the complete Download directory to an other location to clean the image as much as possible. And moved this directory back again. I don't have to do that anymore. I just after the mount copy the files back to it's location if I have some need for them.
