Help me understand how the insider 'Release Preview' ring and 'queued for unenrollment' is supposed to work

I'm in the Insider Release Preview ring. Many months ago, before 22H2 was finalized, I queued myself for unenrollment in the insider program on one of my systems. I had understood this to mean that once I was on the final released build, I would be unenrolled (removed) from the insider builds. Two days ago, my system updated to the final release but status still showed as queued for unenrollment. I thought that it might just take a day or two to unenroll me.

Today, my system decided to install a new build but still shows me as queued for unenrollment.

Does this make sense to anyone? Why am I still getting new builds?

I'm guessing that I will need to do a clean install to extricate myself from these insider builds and go back to the final release.

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
"Relax, " said the night man
"We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave"

Welcome to the Hotel California...

Just disable all the telemetry stuff in your account settings.
Those items are required for the Insider channel.
Once you disable them... you're no longer an Insider.

Now as for the Windows version... I dunno.
When I left the Insiders channel, I disabled those items
then upgraded from Win 10... again. Aka, new install.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I don't think you can go backwards with an In-Place upgrade.
I think someone tried that on Ten Forums, and it didn't allow that.

On Oct 6th 2021... I wanted to leave Insider and switch to RTM.
So I just restored a Windows 10 image to my Win 11 SSD, then did an In-Place upgrade from Win 10 to Win 11.

Thank you, Bree and Ghot. I had not considered that. I didn't know that I could go backward in build number trying those methods.

I have a bulletproof backup scheme in place, so I'll give this a try, likely tonight.

Thanks for the information.

The In-Place upgrade from W10 to W11 works flawlessly. I've done it a few times now.
It's exactly the same as doing an In-Place upgrade from W11 to W11.

Here's my threads from the 1st time I did it...

The ONLY issue I had when doing the In-Place upgrade from W10 to W11, was a Winaero Tweaker setting that I used on W10, that broke the calendar on W11.
If you use this on W10 you must UN-check this box, before or after the In-Place upgrade.
Then the W11 calendar will work properly.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
How about trying an in-place repair upgrade with an RTM 22H2 ISO?
I tried that but it does not work. You still remain on Beta (and RP). I have tried various methods and you always remain in the Hotel California.

I think this is a major screw up by MS as it is clear from text that you are supposed to unenroll if you click setting.

The only partial solution I have found is to stop optional telemetry (I am on RP 22621 521) but that does not stop all the feedback notifications rubbish.

I don't think you can go backwards with an In-Place upgrade.
You cannot step down to a lower major build number. But the RP build is 22621, and so is the RTM build. You can (and I have) do an in-place upgrade of an RP install of 22H2 22621 with the RTM ISO.

In the case of a minor feature update by enablement package, the base build is treated as being the same. So, for example, W10 builds 19041/19042/19043/19044 can all be repaired with a 19041 ISO. The same should apply to 22621/22622.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

Yes you can use iso to revert RP 22621.251 set to unenroll from Insider to RTM 22621.382 and then update to 22621.251 but here is the problem - it does not unenroll you.
You go to Insider Settings and you are still enrolled as an RP Insider!!!

So it is a totally waste of time trying to use iso as a means to unenroll from RP as you just end back at square 1.

Worse, if you are on RP 22621.251, you do not get update offered so you cannot leave.

Only option I can think of that might work is to uninstall updates in RP so RP version is less than .382, then you might get offered 22621.251 RTM and then it unenrolls you?

edit - that failed as well as it wanted to update to 22621.607.

So conclusion - unenroll just does not work if on 22621!

Well, I threw the big hammer at it and reinstalled from scratch. I'm typing from that machine now. Thankfully, I have things installed in what I at least consider to be a semi intelligent arrangement for making reinstallation easy.

I have a script that performs all of Windows customizations, so after a clean install, Windows is completely customized in about 1 minute. I have all Windows drivers backed up, so that took barely any time as well.

I run Plex Server from that machine, but that runs as a VM from its own HDD.

I also have a really large library of software, music, and documents. Again, all on a separate drive.

So, a reinstall was super easy. I just have a number of applications that I need to reinstall, but that's easy.

I guess that the one dumb thing I did was running an insider build on my primary machine. I'll leave that to test machines and VMs in the future.
