Did you try POWERCFG /HIBERNATE OFF from an elevated command prompt? This will disable hibernation (if that's what you want) and will delete HIBERFIL.SYS

Thanks Rob for your assistance. Tried that and many other methods yesterday but on reboot
item reappeared. Have just done procedure again, turned off computer, restarted and item is gone.

Wait a minute. It has returned!

Noel: Here's a link to a tutorial that gives you 3 ways to do this, including the one that magically undoes itself:

This is a real longshot, but are you running any OEM software for a UPS (battery backup) device? I previously used an APC UPS and the software that came with it (PowerChute) used to issue a warning if you disabled hibernation. It didn't try to re-enable it but it did issue a warning. Are you possibly running software that re-enables hibernation? I've never had a problem with powercfg /h off (at least on Windows 10 and prior)...haven't taken the Windows 11 plunge yet.

I have tried all procedures in Enable or Disable Hibernate in Windows 11.
Reboot/shutdown/restart item is removed. Wait 1-2 minutes and it returns (12.7gig)
I have never had a problem with powercfg /h off before. No software that I am using
has ever caused this problem.

Apparently you aren't alone. The section that discusses using Sysinternals Process Monitor sounds promising.
