Windows 11 Pro - version 24H2
I've been keeping my system Hibernate after 30 minutes of not being used. Is it better to do that or have the computer shut off?

What's your best reason to use hibernation? What do you hope you are accomplishing?

It's personal choice to some extent. I've never used it.

I use sleep mode after 2 hours, Mike. It works for me, but rarely is there 2 hours where the PC isn’t being used. I don’t use Hibernation except that it’s the default for my Lenovo YOGA 7i. I’ve never gotten around to changing it.
I really don’t think it matters.

I just want to choose the setting that will put my computer into a reduced power mode just short of turning it off. I thought that my turning it off every night would wear out the power unit switch.

When my PC goes into Sleep mode, PC, lights, fans, monitors, everything turns OFF until I touch the mouse or keyboard.

On my Windows 10 Desktop, I just leave it on all the time and let a timeout blank the screen, after some non use. No need to touch the power button to bring the system back to life.

However, on my Windows 11 Laptop, I use Hibernate when I close the lid. My laptop travels a bit and is often away from a power source. So when there is going to be some idle time, and I don't want to plug it in again, I close the lid to save power. When I do, everything shuts off. For me, to bring the laptop out of hibernation, I need to use the power button, so I don't see how it saves the power switch. The power switch is not one of my worries.

In that case, Hibernation is not for you because hibernation COMPLETELY shuts down the system. In fact, you can unplug the computer once in hibernation (that's kind of the whole point of hibernation) and it will make no difference.

However, be aware that even when shutdown or in hibernation, there may be some very small power draw to support functionality such as Wake On LAN. In addition, some systems will still power USB ports for charging or supplying power to USB devices even while the PC is off.

Any fireman will always tell you to turn off at the mains plug or unplug any appliance not in use wherever possible to minimise the fire risk. I use sleep mode to pause PC use for a short while whilst I'm at home else the PC is turned off at the mains switch.

I know nothing about Tasmania, but in the US, few outlets have switches.

You can wire an outlet to a switch easily but why would you want to kill the power to any sensitive electronic device? 220v or 110v, I wouldn’t just kill the power… just shut the pc down. If you want to kill the power do it via the toggle on the psu AFTER you shut it down via the OS.

We also use 120V AC.

Means that there are no 3kW teapots like in Europe. (Most US outlets don't support 25A.)
