@dacrone Thanks for that suggestion, but @Brink's methods in the tutorial (post #2 above) work perfectly, without any futzing with the registry keys, AAAAAnd, if I do that with the reg keys, I get the same problems I cited in post #3 above: in FE, plugged-in drives don't show up for easy use in the Navigation pane, and the FE icon in the Taskbar goes kerflooey.

@dacrone But if I use that registry edit (post #22), do my externals show up in the nav pane when I plug them in? I think not. I either have to keep the This PC display or lose the usefulness of navigating all of my externals and flash drives with ease. I'm forever sticking things into those USB ports to get things done I can't do with just my main drives.

@dacrone I really appreciate it, but that all seems a bit much to me. Yes, it apparently works, but not as well as the This PC display works with plugged-in and then unplugged drives. I'm glad you posted this solution, though, because other people will find this, read what you've proposed, and benefit from it. Good stuff.
