How long did/do you use your machines after OS EOL

I usually swap to the latest OS before it's released, [Due to some work reasons I am still running Windows 10 on my systems, but have access to Win 11 Via Windows to Go], so I would say that I never run an OS after EOL.

This is not totally true as I sometimes need to run an old OS for testing purposes but this is Either by the use of Virtualisation, or Windows to go, I have a collection ISO's, of all the main versions of Microsoft OS going back to Windows XP which I can have running from an External NVME Drive in a few minutes

Also use an Adjustable Support for Laptop and Adjustable stand for monitor
still running and using XP as a VM almost daily -- have Pro minidisc recorder which only works on XP and some Vinyl record cutting hardware that requires XP. I have LAN connection via SAMBA to a NAS (SMB1) and OFFICE 2010 on it which still works perfectly. There;s no problem on Internet if you need it -- just route your connections (email and Firefox - there's a version that stil works on XP) through a proxy server (via the NAS) and it's fine although it's easier to simply do all the Internet and email through NAS / Host machine.

I've also got Windows 3.11 (Windows for workgroups) on a VM !! but that was just "to see if it could be done" - I found an old USB->floppy disk device and a set of Windows 3.11f loppy disks which you can turn to floppy disc images. Couldn't set up though the Novell DOS LAN !!!!.

There's so much paranoia about security these days - especially by HOME users -- people would be more profitably engaged in learning to recognize scams, avoid them, prevent against identity fraud, stop giving out so much info on social media, avoid email; attachments and only install recognised 3rd party apps.

Even those who use torrent sites can be decently protected if they simply use WD and don't download any torrents that are in zip or especially rar files - if it's the "native format" e.g m4a / mp etc then even torrent users are unlikely to get malware.

Cheers
jimbo

MS could be saying that as a scare tactic to get user to switch to Win 11 earlier than they want too.
They have consistently stopped updating every OS on the date they have said that support will end. I can confirm that as I run several older OS, either physically or as VMs.

For Win7 SP1 the final Security and Quality Rollup that was delivered through Windows Update was January 14, 2020—KB4534310 (Monthly Rollup). After that only customers who bought a subscription for ESU got any further updates.

I still get updates for MSE on W7
As I said earlier, the MSRT and MSE definitions are not considered part of the OS and continue to get updates to this day. It is the only part of ESU that is free for all of us. That is due to stop when ESU support ends on 10 Jan 2023.

1644664744157.png

It's the same for any version of Windows 10 that has passed its end of support date. For version 2004 the last CU issued was for Patch Tuesday in December 2021. Defender is not classed as part of the OS though, and continues to get its Security Intelligence updates to this day. There is no reasonable expectation that Windows 10 will get any further CUs after October 2025. There is every chance that its Defender will continue to stay up to date.

Everyone seems to have old computers lying around. I still have, and use occasionally, a old laptop with Windows 3.1. It has a whopping 40 MB hard drive. I have the network adapter, but only connect it up for short periods, when necessary. It has MS Word, Excel, and Draw. I use it with a separate interface to my radio that can send/receive Morse Code, via a serial port. That program is written in C, compiled with Turbo-C ,and runs in DOS. But the battery is shot, and the charging circuit burned up. So it takes a few minutes to fire it up and never really knows what time it is. When I'm using it, it is never on the internet.
I also have an old MS-DOS 6 with Win3.1 white Toshiba Laptop/Notebook. It does have a battery/CMOS issue after not being used for a week or more but not a big chore to set up the BIOS at bootup. It is kinda eerie working with MB rather than GB or TB. As to floppy disks I've thrown out most but along with that machine I have a Win10 Desktop with a 3.5" floppy drive, also came across a couple of the old Epson combo 3.5"/5.25" drives while cleaning out my storage shed.

I think you and I are saying the same thing. While there are no security updates to the OS itself there are still updates to the security program. I see the same thing happening with Windows 10. Plus, I would think that third party security programs will continue updates for a reasonable amount of time. At least that's what I mean by security updates.

What Microsoft mean by security updates are vulnerability patches for the OS itself, and its those that cease at end of support. As you say, that doesn't mean the virus definitions. For Windows 7 those will continue until ESU support ends in January 2023. For Windows 10 there's no obvious end point, as the same definitions are being used in Windows 11.

All things considered, Yes. I find Win11 mostly a visual change and rearranging of some built-in functions, is a learning experience. So far I haven't found any programs that worked on Win10 that don't work on Win11.

At least as far as virus detection goes, yes. In fact Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 uses the same scan engine and definitions as Windows 10/11. Of course, Windows Security has other protections built on top of that, but the basic AV detection is the same in all.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I've extended the use of plenty of computers past the EoL of the originally installed OS, but I've always managed to upgrade the OS itself before EoL occurs.
