Solved How long does the Windows 11 upgrade take using Windows Update?

Then use Macrium Reflect Free to make a system image before you try anything. Then if it all gets messed up you can restore the image and be back where you started.
Thanks, Bree I have already done that so I suppose if it goes pear-shaped at least I can get back my Windows 10 eh??:)

Hmm having just read the entire thread I am not so sure about doing the update method and I have an ISO on my desktop so if I mount that ISO will it still give me the options of saving my apps and settings ?? Sorry but am not really that savvy and my broadband is only a 50Mbs download speed which I suppose would make the update method incredibly slow?

Hi,
Inplace upgraded my acer q9550 win-10 the other day 68% point took the most time but finally finished at just under an hour

Had the same weird right click menu disappearing that all three other upgrades had but once again restart solved that one.

Upgraded my Surface Pro 6 last night. I used the Update Assistant. The download and initial work took about 20 minutes during which I could use the Surface Pro fully. The upgrade itself took about 20 minutes from 0% to 100% and being able to log back in.

I went with the ISO option (right-click>>> mount ISO) for the Windows 11 upgrade. It took only 1 restart and 19 minutes total upgrade time.
ISO download took about 2-3 minutes...

EDIT:
The upgrade did not use up more hard drive space. In fact, I got 1GB back after upgrade (?).

I was offered the Windows 11 upgrade in Windows Update. I could have clicked on the update button but chose to use the in-place upgrade with the ISO instead. I am glad I did it that way because it was a lot faster that way.

The in-place upgrade using the Windows 11 ISO file took about 45 minutes.

BTW, I forgot that I had a virtual DVD drive. When I double-clicked on the Windows 11 ISO I got this.

Yes, I estimate that would have taken at least an hour through Window Update. Your m2 NVMe SSD is the main reason your update was so much fater than my test in post #1.

Thanks. I have found a few glitches with Windows 11 so hopefully those will be fixed in the next few months. I hope to keep this computer for at least another year or two until I replace it with one with an AMD Zen 4.

I also have computers with Windows 7 and Windows 10 so I will be bouncing around forums. My other computers will never have Windows 11 so they will keep there existing O/Ss.

I was prepared for a long upgrade process and wanted to see how it progressed on my spinning HDD desktop.

After getting the Win 11 ready message from WU;
- 10-15 min to download
- 2 hrs 15 min to install
Unfortunately, it kicks out to a dark screen after 30 seconds of use and have to log in again. No change after reboot.
- 30 minute to restore Win 10 image

Next weekend I will try the update from the Win 11 ISO that I used for my laptop.

Mine took about 75 minutes using Windows Update. It was strange though because it downloaded 25%, then started over. Then it got the download and got to 72% of installation and then told me updates had been paused for a week. I went back to search for updates and it started the download again and then installed completely. After it rebooted, everything went quickly and it was up and running without problems in another 10 minutes or so.

This time I installed from an ISO on the same spinning HDD on my desktop. Download of the ISO was fast, and setup was run and after mounting it. The check for updates took about 5-7 minutes, and then the prompt to install appeared. The time for clicking install to the first reboot was 1 hour 10 minutes. Time from this to the login screen was 15 minutes, and then wait while we are setting up for another 5 minutes. I do not remember having this last step when I did the upgrade from the WU.

In summary, total time using the ISO was about 1 hour 45 which is way better than the 2 hours 30 min via WU.

I got fed up waiting for Microsoft to get around to offering W11 to update this pc which meets all of their requirements. I already had an ISO on DVD downloaded in early October. Doing a clean install took 20 minutes and activation was done from my Microsoft account. I will now have to update the info on members pc's from W10 to W11.

Why do you have to wait for the update if you already have the ISO? You can do in-place upgrade directly using the ISO which will be much faster. But clean install is the better way to go which you already did.
