Silvio I don’t think it matters entirely because people who don’t know that they can bypass requirements would be a massive percentage. It’s not like Dell/HP your local computer store that can sell you a new computer, are going to inform a consumer of the fact.

I also think, the main issue with installing Windows 11 on incompatible hardware, for the average user (even if they know it's possible and know how or ar prepared to try), is that it doesn't upgrade to the next version automatically. So they have a future of having to reinstall each time there's another version, which could seem like too much hassle to many, who just want to turn a computer on and use it. Having to back up their files and reinstall Windows, then put their files back on - and spend time doing that.

However there are plenty of 8th to 10th generation laptops available second hand that will run windows 11 - maybe they will become more desirable and cost more!

When I discovered (years ago), how easy it was to install Win 11 on "incompatible hardware", I immediately sold the 2x used 9th gen Dell machines, I had bought for running Win 11.

I am now also selling my 2x remaining 8th Gen PCs (i8500/i9500), in anticipation, of the "sheep" flooding the market in October, with cheap ex corporate machines, with Win 10 Pro COA in BIOS/TPM 2.0, either single/dual Xeon V4 cpus.

I'm not a Windows gamer, so don't need 11th gen+ architecture.

There are two 11" 2-in-1 convertibles that I've had, used, and like. The Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1 and the Lenovo Yoga 11e. Both have nice keyboards and were typically supplied with embedded keys for W10 Pro (or Pro Education which also activates Pro).

Both are fully W11 compatible (the Lenovo Yoga 11e from 5th gen on). RAM is soldered, 4GB or 8GB. Avoid the lowest spec models with 64GB/128GB eMMC, the top of the range had M2 NVMe. Good used examples of either can be found for around £70.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
I did actually try the Dell latitude 11 (and the HP equivalent) and yes very nice - however they have tougened glass, low resolution screens - the text was too faint and difficult to read generally. Which was disappointing.

i have a strong feeling many wont bother to get a new computer but invest in a bigger and better smart phone
as most of the younger generation along with many others now just use their phone for internet access
along with any apps which can include MS office and general day to day usage.

i think MS are shooting themselves in the foot but thats the MS way.

I'm constantly amused with the "how low can you go" discussions. :LOL: While I don't doubt you can run Windows 11 on some pretty slow and low obsolete hardware if so desired, the question you have to ask is: Is it worth it? Personally, I like my machine to be more responsive for all my applications.

I had an HP Envy H8 with the Core i7-3770 and 24GB of memory, the GPU was the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640. It seemed like like at least a decent configuration at the time, that was around nine years ago. However, my 3D design and PCB design software was sometimes painfully slow, especially for larger projects. Also, even applications like browsers took a few seconds to initialize. When it was finally time to upgrade to Windows 11, I had no compunction about leaving this system behind. With a 4-5 x processor boost and around a 20x boost in GPU speed, I think I can live with this system for a while. :-)

I actually have one of those "how low can you go" computers with Windows 11, it's a micro-PC with the Intel N150 processor. In an amusing twist, the little N150 actually holds it's own against the Core I7 processor, it's amazing how far things have progressed. My little Micro-PC is close to parity with a mainstream desktop from 8-9 years ago, and it has much faster NVMe drive, and faster USB ports. The N150 embedded GPU also supports higher resolution graphics!:p

I'm sure I could have installed Win11 on my old HP, but I figured after all those years, it didn't owe me anything and I deserved to treat myself to something better. I'm enjoying the 45" wide-screen monitor too, that wasn't supported by my old computer. ;-)

People confuse obsolete with obsolescent.

The millions of pcs that cannot run Windows 11 are not obsolete as they can still run other OS, or even remain on Windows 10 albeit not supported.

For example, phones that only support 3G in UK are obsolescent until O2 (last 3g network) switches off 3G. The phones will then be obsolete.

People will carry on using the obsolescent pcs - in fact they can never really become obsolete untill parts cannot be replaced.

Of course, in time most of these devices will end up on the scrapheap.

And for people out there who think $30 is too much? BFD... It's worth it, imo....

And past ESRs have lasted 3 years or so, so October isn't the end of the world.

Oh and btw, you can still install 24H2 on unsupported hardware. You'll just have to manually go into the Microsoft Catalog and look for updates every month.

For me/us it started with frugality :-) We just couldn't afford a new one. So I started buying secondhand and reinstalling - and it became a bit of a bug. So we then had a laptop each, a netbook for the boy, and by then netbooks were being sold for between £20 and £40 - usually because XP didn't fit on them any more. So I'd buy a load of those, put linux on them and sell them again (didn't really make a profit! But enough to keep buying spare parts). Then with the 10" netbooks with Windows 7 on I'd buy up those and upgrade them to Windows 10 and sell them on again (very small profit). It kept in computers for a number of years! And I still have a couple of boxfulls of computer parts - many of which are probably now obsolete!.

Children are expensive!

I tried getting a 25" Sony CRT (I bought it in 1993) fixed a few years back and the TV repair shop said they no longer make parts for it.

That was the end of that.

So yes, I HAD to change. Just one of the examples out there.

Well, I worked all my life and raised two kids and put them through school. I also started my retirement fund in my early 30's so I'd be able to be reasonably comfortable when I retired. That includes having the funds to keep reasonably current with all my toys, including my computers. ;-)
