How to disable the compatibility-check for software , when upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2 ?
When upgrading from 23H2 to 24H2 , I had to uninstall a favorite program , I often used in 23 H2 , reason ; not compatible in 24H2 !!
Name of this software ; " Shadow Defender " , used this software in Win10 , 23H2 , never problems with it .

Will miss this program very much , so wonder HOW(??) I can keep it in 24H2 ..........?? ;-)

While I have no direct experience with Shadow Defender, I suspect that the answer is probably that you simply will not be able to run it on 24H2.

From their web site:

Shadow Defender can run your system in a virtual environment called 'Shadow Mode'. 'Shadow Mode' redirects each system change to a virtual environment with no change to your real environment.

That sounds like it needs to get operate at a pretty low level making it very susceptible to major OS changes. If Microsoft is flagging it as incompatible, I can only imagine that there must be a good reason for that. Any software that has to operate at that level is bound to need updates with major OS changes and it appears that they have not made a single change to the program in over 4 years now. In fact, in their change log I do not see a single reference to Windows 11, any version, at all.

I wish that I had better news.

However, ultimately, I would check with them directly to see if they can offer any workarounds or see if they have any further development plans at all.

Note: I would suggest a full disk image backup of the Windows drive first, "just in case" something goes horribly wrong :-)

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

Regarding Shadow defender in Windows 11 24H2, there are two ways to conserve it:

Uninstall SD before upgrading. After the (successful) upgrade, reinstall it using the "modified" installer that can be downloaded from:
Shadow Defender on Windows 11

Do an in-place upgrade using the UFD customized by Rufus 4.6. If it doesn´t work (during the install a message appears asking for SD to be uninstalled), use the previous method.

I had Explorer Patcher and although I bypassed compatibility check I got a warning that this software must be uninstalled to proceed. No big deal, I uninstalled it, upgraded and reinstalled.

Just for clarification, are you talking about the Win 11 system requirements compatibility checks?

To upgrade unsupported computer (with SSE4.2 capable CPU) from Windows 10 or earlier Windows 11 versions to 24H2, you must download the ISO from Microsoft in order to upgrade offline. Then disconnect from the internet to prevent Windows Update messing with your working drivers or any update causing BSOD, but most importantly to prevent a hidden online compatibility check that makes the upgrade to fail. Yes, I have confirmed in over 10 unsupported PCs, if you don't disconnect from the internet the upgrade to 23H2 fails at 70-75% of the first stage, before even the first restart, so I wouldn't risk it in 24H2 either. Then you have two options:

Option 1: Download latest Rufus 4.6 Beta or higher and create a USB flash drive from the ISO configured to bypass compatibility check. Then start Setup from there.

Option 2: Open the ISO with File Explorer (mount it) and then press WIN+R to open a Run box and execute the code:
D:\setup /product server which tells Setup this is a "Server" version and skips compatibility check. Replace D: with the appropriate letter for the virtual DVD that is created when you mount the ISO.

Although the above should work, to be sure nothing interferes with the upgrade, permanently disable any third-party antivirus and also all startup applications (Task Manager, Startup section) and non-Microsoft services. Open a Run box as above and execute msconfig, go to Services section, check the box to hide all Microsoft services and uncheck all boxes to disable other services. I would also open Device Manager and disable devices not needed for the upgrade so Setup won't try to find new drivers for them. I disabled, LAN, audio, Bluetooth, TV tuner.

After the upgrade completes successfully, you can connect to the internet again to activate, if necessary. Also check your other applications, such as Office, they may need to activate again. And of course don't forget to enable whatever you disabled before the upgrade and restart to take effect. You can install ay other updates without hacking since they don't check compatibility.

Also uninstall Explorer Patcher, apparently 24H2 thinks it is "incompatible" (even if you have the latest version) and refuses to proceed until you remove it. You can install it again after the upgrade.

PS: In some computers Windows Defender blocks it as virus. It is a false positive. Just disable Defender to install and enable it again after.

Only want Shadow Defender back in 24H2 , it works very fine in 23H2............this "compatibility check " has to be disabled before upgrading !!

I am not familiar with Shadow Defender, sorry. I thought you were talking about Explorer Patcher. But download latest version and try to install with Administrator rights. It might work. If there is a warning that is not compatible, but allows you to continue anyway, just continue. Some old applications give false warnings on newer Windows versions.
