Windows 11
Just switched to window 11 as it came on my new computer. It seems i am forced to install and pay for windows 365 and store all my data on the web.
I would rather store it on the 3 hard drives that I have always used but cannot discover how to get rid of the cloud system. All help would be great.
The main reason is that in my part of the UK i can only get an upload speed of 6meg and a downbload of around14. It takes ages to save a file. I also dont wish to be blackmailed into paying for storage that I already have paid for. Every time i open my machone I am pressed to renew 365 which I have not purchased. Still on office 2013 that I can use.

I found it easier to ignore OneDrive by adding a new User Local Account with Admin rights, rebooting into it then removing the User that has the Microsoft Account. Having sufficient accessible storage with a NAS drive the only reason I can see for using OneDrive is for travelers that need access to data when away from their local system.

So far, I've installed Windows 11 over twenty times, and every time, one of the first bits of MS Bull Hocky, that I DELETE is "One Drive".
I keep all my data files on local drives or Flash Drives. It never leaves my house!
SAFE, never Sorry!

And when your house burns downs or gets floods, all is lost forever LOL

Any real expert knows you should have an offsite backup. Not everybody can easily do that (me for example).

So I use the great Onedrive.

Just because you think it is bull, do not assume that everybody believes the same way as you.

It never leaves my house!
I don't like that. If my house burns down (you never know!) and all my data is lost. I have all my family photo's, holiday photo's, financial administration and so on on my hard disks and I would not like if that would all be gone. It's more than 50 years of history (as far as photo's are concerned).

So, besides making backups to local disks and flash drives, a few times a year I put all my data on a flash drives, that I give to my son, who lives in another town nearby. I fully trust him to do that, so in that view there is no problem. He has more than one version of them.

But I don't use Cloud services, only my own Internet provider, who gives me a service to use personal space, I use for storing the most recent data. All fiIes that have to do with my personal circumstances (for instance having bank-account-numbers or bank statements or medical data or such things) are first printed to pdf and then password protected. That's the way I store them in my system as well (no password protected system itself).

As soon as a new backup is made for storing (at my son's place) I erase the files from that external location to make space for the next months.

I'm also a user of OneDrive by choice. I realize it's not everybodies cup of tea, and I am fine with that.

Reasons that i like it:
As others have mentioned, it does provide a pretty easy method for many to get their files in a second offsite location that is more or less an automatic backup for them. My sisters house did burn down, so I think about that potentially constantly.

Second it makes a very easy way for me to gain access to my files no matter where I am. If I am at work, I can get to my files. If I am on vacation, I can get to my data. If I am on my phone at a restaurant, I can get to my files.

Third, it's great for people who have a computer that just dies or has to be replaced and they weren't making any other type of backup. They log in to a replacement machine and viola...the stuff they thought they lost for good is just magically there.

Finally, I setup all 4 family members phones to backup all of their pictures and videos from the devices to their own 1TB OneDrive account that we get as part of my $69 a year Office 365 sub ( I get a 30% off discount through work). Therefore, if a phone is lost, stolen, or damaged in any way, the content they have captured is safely stored elsewhere. I

I've found Office 365 to be well worth the cost for me personally., For $99 regularly (or the $69 with my discount), I get 6 people who can each get their own 1TB of OneDrive space. It's honestly the cheapest cloud option I have found anywhere for that amount of space. As a side bonus, we all can install the latest Office suite on an unlimited number of devices if we want to do so. And Microsoft encourages people to share their subscriptions with friends and family's. So you could in theory split up that yearly cost and sublease it to a friend if you wanted to do so.

Moved where? and because of the irrelivance. now that is a great "BIG" word antspants and i just informed everyone i did not have to have a subscription to Word 365 and pay for each Month of use, i was just wanting people to know that the original poster is in the UK, maybe in the UK he is required if he is going to use the copy of Microsoft 365 that came on the new laptop, and it is installed then he has to pay for the subscription and use the cloud to store any file.
Again i downloaded the Microsoft Word 365 from a Microsoft web site in the USA, and paid $69.95 for it, so no subscription no Monthly fee.

Are you using the same MS account, because MS will not let you to pay for an active subscription, even if you want to.

I supplied you a link, you even quoted that link. I didn’t move it. Someone requested it to be moved, an admin moved it.
But by all means, repeat what you said before it was moved. Cheers.

He posted the link with where they moved it to. I in fact responded to your other thread.

I 100% guarantee you will find out in a year that you did get a subscription and it is going to automatically renew you at that time. That is the only way MS has ever offered Office365/Microsoft 365.

Now perhaps you bought just Microsoft Office from some website that came with Word and Excel and you got it for $69.95. If it was directly from Microsoft, that cost should have been around $149. So if you got it from a microsoft affiliate offering questionable licenses, it may have been cheaper than this. And it would not have had 365 in the title....that signifies an annual subscription.

I really wish i knew the answer
Well, you've been told the answer by at least a dozen forum members in at least three separate threads. You have subscribed for a year to Office365 Personal and will need to pay again in a year's time.
It's the same in the US, in the UK & in every other country.
So it's well past time that you stopped interrupting Hwalker's thread with this diversion. If you have any further questions, use one of your own threads on the subject to ask.

Any real expert knows you should have an offsite backup. Not everybody can easily do that (me for example).

So I use the great Onedrive.

Just because you think it is bull, do not assume that everybody believes the same way as you.
I use OneDrive, I really don't understand the paranoia behind it.
