I know.. moving TB of data is not fun.. even less fun on USB2... USB1 and you probibly end up finishing the copy year 3026.

Yeah.. its true.. i do hate all OS's after all this years now.. The breaking point was in 2022 i think.. then i really started to hating installing/tweaking and set up systems.. and not a single OS is good.. they all have its pros and cons.. but no one and i mean no one is a good OS. :eyeroll:

I dont remember exactly what it was.. i looked in to this back in 2018/2019ish.. But i have a vague memory of shadow copying being involved as it maps the filesystem of free/used space.
Next time you get the disk is busy on eject.. open windows system monitor and look at disk activity.

Just pull the plug!!!
If it's not write caching and, you're not actually transferring data, the most it could be doing is being scanned or generating thumbnails, etc.

Could right-click start button and select disk management.

Right-click on the drive and select offline then you can just disconnect power from it.

Might need to go back into disk management and set it back to online the next time you power the drive back on or plug it in again.

For this particular problem I have placed a simple batch file on my desktop to refresh Windows Explorer, attached here (just change the *.txt extension to *.bat). Make sure all your current window work is finished (renaming a sequence of files, etc.) and all work of any kind is saved, then just double-click the batch file. After it runs, use the standard tray button "Safely remove hardware and eject media". It will work unless something else is genuinely using the drive.

To permanently deal with this issue (and many others), next time I build a main desktop machine, it's going to run Linux; I've already put Mint on an old laptop to ease myself into the switch. If I'd known Windows 11 would be such a pain, I'd have done it a year ago when we all had to ditch 10 for 11 (despite the fact that, as pretty much everyone can attest, there was no discernible gain for the end-user).

But unfortunately they suckered me in for one last iteration, and here we are.

I find that signing out almost always stops any of those hidden processes that may be locking the drive, then I just sign back in an eject it.

If all the writing/transferring data is finished, I generally would wait a few seconds and just yank it out.
So far I have not lost any data.

Yeh, agree. Even between Window Remove and 3rd party options, sometimes Windows just get plain bloody ornery and won't let go. Yank!! Take that Microsoft.

NOTE
In EVERY case, the USB device (xtnl drive, flash, thumb, whatever) is NEVER the sole source of whatever is/was on it. I never trust any single usb device to be that reliable.

Edwin came the closest to eluding to this, but I'm curious why no one has mentioned this yet: The default policy for USB storage is such that there IS NO NEED to eject a USB device. By default, you can simply unplug it. I use external storage every single day but have not ejected a drive in years. I NEVER have a problem with this.

I don't have a USB drive where I am right now so I can't send a screenshot at the moment, but if you look at the properties for the drive and look at the policies tab, you should see that the drive is set to require no ejection.

When I am in front of another system where I have a USB drive, I'll send a proper screenshot.

I have zero hesitation doing this with usb thumb drives but I’d rather not tempt fate with a multi terabyte usb slaved hdd. I’d consider up to 256 ssd… possibly. Just platters and its own power source.. I hate that hdd cutoff noise. Have always felt like it’s corruption waiting to happen. Personal preference, I suppose.

i have actually once got a tiny filesystem corruption by just removing a USB-stick.. i never wrote to it, just read a PDF file.. and when it refused to eject i just removed it... so i had to run checkdisk to get rid of the darn popup error as it wanted to check the filesystem.
But once since USB came to now is kind of low odds for anything going wrong. *LOL*

I can understand the hesitation. To each, his own. However, I'll simply say that I just yank the plug on my 40TB array at least once a week and have had zero issues doing so

That metallic click sounds disturbingly like the heads hitting the platter!
It almost never is, of course. Heads never touch a spinning platter, they float on a cushion of air. Loss of power triggers an emergency retract which should be able to park the heads before the platters stop spinning. But one day, who knows?

YES ! Whats the use of this writing cache , if you use the HDD only for data-bacups ?
So, disabled the cache and switch the drive off , without using "safe removal "...............!

Problem solved ! ( ??)

That's not universal. Here's a 4TB removable SSD on my system. You can turn off write caching on the drive, but since it's a backup drive that receives large quantities of data in a lump, it would slow down the backup considerably.
