How to get the Windows 11 2024 Update (24H2)

UPDATE 1/16:

 Windows Blogs:

Today, Pavan Davuluri announced the latest Copilot+ PC innovation and the availability of the Windows 11 2024 Update. We are excited to continue to bring the power of AI and new experiences to Windows 11 and enhance what you can achieve using Copilot+ PCs and Windows 11. In this blog, I’ll share more information on the coming availability of new features and apps for Copilot+ PCs, details on how to get the Windows 11 2024 Update and details for commercial and education customers.

Coming availability of the newest AI experiences for Copilot+ PCs

We continue to introduce new AI features that light up more natural and conversational engagement with your devices, with experiences you can only get with Copilot+ PCs. Windows Insiders with Copilot+ PCs will be the first to experience these new features, leveraging the valuable expertise of this community before they become broadly available to customers, with a phased rollout to select devices and markets beginning in November. We plan to regularly share more information on the status of each new feature and app closer to the availability date, including by region and device silicon technology. When these new features and apps become more widely available they will be released to Copilot+ PCs via:

Windows Update:
  • Recall (Preview)1
  • Click to Do (Preview)
  • Improved Windows Search
App updates from the Microsoft Store:
  • Super resolution in Photos
  • Generative fill and erase in Paint

The Windows 11 2024 Update

Starting today, we begin to release the Windows 11 2024 Update, also referred to as Windows 11, version 24H2. This update is a full operating system (OS) swap that contains new foundational elements required to deliver transformational AI experiences and exceptional performance. You can learn more about all the new features including enhanced battery saver; Bluetooth LE audio; HDR background support and support for Wi-Fi 7 in What’s new inside this update.

We are taking a phased approach with the 2024 Update rollout, based on when data shows your device is ready and you will have a great experience. We will begin with eligible devices running Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H22 for those who have previously opted in to be amongst the first to experience new enhancements. (How can you be among the first to experience new features? Navigate to Settings > Windows Update, and turn on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.”) For more information on ways to get the update, watch this video.

If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we may put a safeguard hold in place and not offer the update until that issue is resolved. Over time, we will make the 2024 Update available to more and more devices based on hardware eligibility, reliability metrics and other factors that impact the update experience. We will let you know via the Windows Update Settings page3 when it’s available for your device. We will regularly share more information on the status of the rollout via Windows release health hub.

The Windows 11 2024 Update continues the annual feature update cadence, with new feature updates released in the second half of the calendar year. This new version resets the 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions.

Information for commercial and education customers

Version 24H2 is now available through Windows Server Update Services (including Configuration Manager), Windows Update for Business and the Microsoft 365 admin center2,4. We recommend that commercial organizations begin targeted deployments to validate that their apps, devices and infrastructure work as expected with the new release. You can find more information on IT tools to support Windows 11, version 24H2 in the Windows IT Pro Blog. Enterprise and Education editions will receive 36 months of support beginning today.

This release also marks the availability of the next Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release, Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024. The LTSC provides customers with access to an option for special-purpose devices and environments, such as manufacturing, healthcare systems or other environments that require longer term device update stability5. Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 is supported for five years. (Note: Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 is also available today and has a 10-year support lifecycle6.)

Experience the latest innovations in Windows 11

As I often note, installing the latest updates is the best way to keep your Windows device protected and productive with the latest features and innovations. We are committed to delivering continuous innovation to Windows 11 so that you can benefit from the best experiences as new features are ready. If you have not yet moved to Windows 11, now is a great time to do so, and Windows Backup is available to help you back up files, themes, some settings to many of your installed apps and Wi-Fi information. As is our normal practice, we will closely monitor the rollout of these new Windows 11 features, and continue to share timely information on the status of the rollout and known issues (open and resolved) via the Windows release health dashboard and @WindowsUpdate. Please continue to tell us about your experience by providing comments or suggestions via Feedback Hub.

Before you begin downloading an ISO

Make sure you have:

  • An internet connection (internet service provider fees may apply).
  • Sufficient data storage available on the computer, USB, or external drive you are downloading the .iso file to.
  • A blank DVD disc with at least 8GB (and DVD burner) to create a bootable disc. We recommend using a blank USB or blank DVD, because any content on it will be deleted during installation.
  • If you receive a “disc image file is too large” message while attempting to burn a DVD bootable disc from an ISO file, consider using a higher capacity Dual Layer DVD.

Ensure the PC you want to install Windows 11:

  • Has a 64-bit CPU: Windows 11 can only run on 64-bit CPUs. To see if your PC has one, go to Settings > System > About , or search “System Information” in Windows and look under “System Type.”
  • Meets system requirements:
Not all devices running Windows 10 are eligible to receive a Windows 11 upgrade. See the Note below for details.
    • WARNING: Installing Windows 11 media on a PC that does not meet the Windows 11 minimum system requirements is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. If you proceed with installing Windows 11 on a PC that does not meet the requirements, that PC will no longer be supported and won't be entitled to receive updates. Damages to the PC due to lack of compatibility aren't covered under the manufacturer warranty.

Once the download completes you can use the Verify your download option to ensure the integrity of the file.

Note: See the Windows 11 device specifications for upgrade requirements and supported features. Certain features require additional hardware. We also recommend that you visit your PC’s manufacturer website for information about updated drivers and hardware compatibility.

Installation instructions (DVD):

  1. Locate the folder where you downloaded the Windows 11 ISO to.
    • To use Windows Disk Image Burner to create the installation DVD, right-click on the ISO file and select Properties . Under the "General tab", click "Change..." where it says, "Opens with:" and select Windows Explorer. Select Apply . This will enable the Burn disc image to display when you right-click on the ISO file.
    • To use a third-party DVD burning program, you can right-click on the ISO file and select Open with .

Installation instructions (ISO):

  1. If you want to install Windows 11 directly from the ISO file without using a DVD or USB flash drive, you can do so by mounting the ISO file. This will perform an upgrade of your current operating system to Windows 11.
  2. To mount the ISO file:
    • Go to the location where you downloaded the ISO file. Then, right-click the ISO file and select  Properties .
    • On the "General" tab, click "Change…" where it says, “Opens with:" and select Windows Explorer for the program you would like to use to open ISO files and select  Apply .
    • Right-click the ISO file and select  Mount .
    • This will create a “virtual” bootable disc. Double-click on it to view the files within. Double-click  setup.exe  to start Windows 11 setup.
  3. Today, Microsoft announced the general availability of Windows 11 version 24H2, also known as the Windows 11 2024 Update. The feature update is rolling out in waves. Microsoft is using a phased and measured approach to rollout to ensure the update is installed as intended. To get the update earlier, be sure to check the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" toggled on in Windows Update or visit the Download Windows 11 site: Screenshot 2024-10-01 145557.jpgScreenshot 2024-10-01 151037.jpgScreenshot 2024-10-01 151421.jpg

Interesting. "Copilot" claims 26100.1876.

I downloaded the ISO, but I don't know how to check its build (without installing it). The files in the ISO are dated 10 September. The 1876 ISO that was delivered from uupdump.net. 19 September.

And there's the 30 September version of KB5043178, which gives 1882.

Maybe I should have stuck with 26100.1742, which lacks some (minor?) bugs that are present in 1876 and 1882.

I used the Media Creation Tool to download the 24H2 ISO from Microsoft, and saved it to my desktop.
Then I right clicked it and chose: MOUNT
Then just did an In-Place Upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2....

Image1.png Image1.png

Changes I noticed in 24H2...

I removed the Recovery partition long ago. This put it back, so I removed it again.
It added Microsoft Teams and Outlook, so I removed those with REVO.
Removed Windows.old with Disk Cleanup.
Had to re-add "Turn off display" to my right click context menu.
Had to re-remove "Pin to quick access" from Recycle Bin right click menu.
Had to turn off System Restore... again.
Last but not least... removed Home from the Navigation pane in File Explorer.

I think I removed everything that MS decided I couldn't live without. :D

NOTE: 24H2 adds a lot of video and image extensions. I would leave those alone. ^^

I installed version 26100.1742 and updated to version 26100.1882 but unfortunately there is nothing new in this version, it's a pity I was counting on some new features, even the weather widget did not move to the right side of the taskbar

Found and removed them as well. I "think" everything is back to normal again. (Well, normal for me anyway)

(fixed with re-install of update)** Windows 11 24H2 Official message- 'didn't go as planned' .
then said reversing changes.. what are they doing???? No clue why the first time had issues..
I had it install again and this time no message.. I guess I should have waited to post this,, but see there are lots of people on Youtube with all kinds of fixes, but I knew it wasn't a big problems with mine, it seems to be good now... Just let it re-installed and reboot, all seems good now...

Back in April, I downloaded a 24H2 ISO 26100.268 from UUP and used Rufus on that ISO to prepare a USB update.

After ensuring a reliable Macrium backup, I ran the update off the USB. Worked ok, although I dislike the ISO update method compared to just the MSU update because of the loss of font choices. The reboot into 24H2 was without incident.

Like Ghot on his comments in running 24H2 though, I found constant little but irritating changes as I worked through my normal day, annoying little pop-ups etc. Since there was no way of determining the extent of this (and I had no desire to spend real time on trial and error), I reverted to 23H2 via the backup.

My point here, I guess, is that converting to 24H2 is easily enough done and quite straightforward. From my perspective, I haven't found a compelling enough reason yet.

I went back to 23H2 as well.
I did make a 24H2 backup though, in case I decide to give it a further try.

Too many un-necessary changes. If it ain't broke... don't fix it. ^^

The Windows 11 Assistant led to BSOD - Inaccessible boot device. Then downloaded the ISO and directly upgraded through it. I don't know if it was the ISO or because I disabled Secure Boot before the upgrade but it worked.

Restored from an earlier image I made this year that was a fresh Install of 23H2 and contained only Paid programs like Macrium Home or Snagit that requires activation then updated Windows and the Paid programs before updating to 24H2. This way all my programs were already activated and did not have to deal with any Activation issues like Aomei Backupper Pro.

Also I got rid of all the bloat and leftovers from any previously installed free programs and cumulative updates from many other programs I use.

I also have backups of any tweaks and my steam game save folders for easy restoration.
