I want to remove "Convert to adobe PDF" from my context menu.

I have tried with "Autoruns" but could not find the right entry!

You could try this, but back up registry first. Copied from the web

Start>Run>regedit
Go into HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/*/shellex/ContextMenuHandlers.
There should be an entry in the list that starts with "Adobe" (Adobe.Acrobat.ContextMenu or something like that). Delete it from the left hand pane of Regedit.

Thanks guys,
I tried all the proposed options one by one and non of them work! They remove the context options from the old context menu (after clicking on "show more options") but not in the new context. Problem is that as soon as I right-click a text file with this context menu adobe acrobat reader will start running in the background and stays there all the time. This happened after the latest Acrobat update. Something about the new context menu that seems to be still unknown and not affected by older methods!

This is unfortunately a dirty trick that adobe has been playing for long, wanting to force you have acro tray run all the time. I went through this already and was able to remove this from windows 10. Many other people also trying to get rid of it as you can see all the topics on this subject on the internet. Unfortunately with the arrival of windows 11 and it's new context menu they have learned how to impose it again!

If I'm not able to remove it I will go to old context menu! But I got used to the new one and found it to be practical for fast copy, paste, cut etc...

But sooner or later we need to figure out the new context menu and how to edit and personalize it. At least this is what I hope :)

Do you actually need Adobe Acrobat Reader, though? Nowadays, most browsers handle PDFs perfectly fine. And for creating PDFs, you can use the "Microsoft Print to PDF" function. I've never used Adobe Reader or another third party pdf reader on Windows 10 and 11. No need for it anymore.

Hi,
I believe all these are just as quick on older context menus not to mention keyboard shortcuts do these tasks quicker than a speeding bullet

@rezpower maybe stop it until you want to use it. If you don't convert files to pdf it would never start. stop it in start menu, any error messages restart it

Yes Edwin, It's Acrobat Pro. I use it to fill my administrative forms and to sign them. Maybe once to twice a month. I will try and go back to the old windows 10 context menu and see if this fixes the problem. I KNOW that if the app is not called by the context menu it will not start as it was the case before.

And if not then let it run! it will not be the only inconvenience imposed by tech companies! :steam:

I just went back to the old context menu and even though "Convert to Adobe acrobat" is disabled, it's not gone as before, but it's now grayed out and as soon as you right-click on a file, acro-tray is lunched. So it seems that there is some thinking behind this and it's somehow designed to force you have that file always running on your PC.

Did you try deleting or renaming the aforementioned reg key?

Yes I deleted [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A6595CD1-BF77-430A-A452-18696685F7C7}
but it didn't change anything.

But I was finally able to go a step forward:
I deleted the dll files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat Elements
ContextMenu.dll, ContextMenu64.dll, ContextMenuIExplorerCommandShim.dll, ContextMenuShim64.dll, agm.dll and BIB.dll

The option in the context menu is now gone and acro-tray is no longer loading either. But I have "Adobe Acrobat DC" in task manager with "COM Surrogate" .

Screenshot 2022-02-05 225253.png

Before deleting those files I tried to unregister them: EX: regsvr32.exe /u ContextMenuShim64.dll
I got successful message but still no change.
Removing the files had no adverse effect on the main program!

After restarting windows it's all fixed and "Adobe Acrobat DC" in task manager with "COM Surrogate" is also absent!
Nothing is loading :) all fixed.

Now the right thing to do should be : Putting back each file back in the folder to see which one is responsible for that behavior and which one is not. So this way I only remove the one/ones needed!

OK , In case someone else has the same issue let me get back here one last time and share the final results:

After checking the files one by one I finally realized that the file causing trouble was ContextMenuIExplorerCommandShim.dll
So I put back all other dll's in the folder and only removed this one. For the other files all you need to do is remove context entries with Autoruns.
