I'm ready to abandon trying to upgrade. I've been effing with this since September. I only need it if a former recording studio client needs something and fortunately its only been a couple times.

then copy and paste the whole Rufus USB to a folder on the external drive.

i have done upgrades this way on Linux in VM upgrading Windows 10 22H2 to Windows 11 25H2
while the VM was on an external drive running Linux.
the Windows upgrade tools wont work it has to be done with Rufus.

Yes old recording studio software. This started out as a Win 7 drive, upgraded to 8 then 8.1 then 10 and finally 11. Migrated from mechanical hard drive to SSD, early in Win 11. One app even requires the old Apple Quicktime.

have at least an 8GB USB stick drive available

Whatever you do, it's not going to work if the disk is connected via USB. Remove it from the enclosure and connect it internally via SATA. Also switch from Windows-to-Go to standard with the Registry key. Upgrade then switch back to Windows-to-Go and put it back in the UEB Enclosure.

open Rufus and browse to the Windows ISO
once the ISO has loaded set 'partition scheme' to GPT
and it will load its defaults automatically.

an option menu will open when you click 'start'
tick all the boxes, everyone one of them.

then start the burn Rufus may display that it wants to download
extra data please click OK.

when the burn has finished close Rufus but leave the USB boot stick in the computer

######

now start up your USB connected Windows system
create a folder on the desktop named 'Rufus upgrade'

then browse to the Rufus USB that you have just made
select all and copy and paste the complete contents of that USB bootable stick
to the folder on the desktop.

remove the Rufus bootable stick from the system.

on the USB Windows system go and open that Rufus upgrade folder
find the setup.exe file and double click it.

when the upgrade window opens make sure you disable get updates
you dont want any updates while the upgrade is taking place.

then the tick the option keep all folders/files and settings

you can now follow any other instructions that are displayed to start the in place upgrade

Like I said, but you tried to avoid it, you must put the disk INSIDE the computer. Windows don't allow installation on removable drives unless you have Enterprise version and create a Windows-to-Go disk. Make a normal installation and then convert to Windows-to-Go.

strange, i can upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 in Gnome Boxes as a VM while the OS Zorin Linux is on an external USB drive
but Windows itself wont upgrade the same way.

Linux and Mac OS can be officially installed on an external USB device. Microsoft doesn't allow Windows to be installed on USB so you cannot move your system to a different computer. They want to use a separate license per computer. The official way is to create a Windows-to-Go installation which normally is possible only in Windows Enterprise and one other version, I don't remember which. Our workaround is to create a standard Windows 11 installation and modify Registry to convert it to Windows-to-Go so it can boot from USB. The standard installation can only be created on an internal storage controller such as SATA or NVMe. That's why I insisted to put the disk inside the computer.

@XxXxX Steve, not a problem. I;m retired and time is what I have.

@spapakons I agree with you. But how do I make it standalone bootable? I installed it on the internal drive from a Macrium Reflect disc image. I used Macrium to "fix boot" but what it did is configure the rescue flash drive as the boot and the Win 11 identified this the same with not meeting requirements. Apparently the boot needs to be on the Win 11 image, not a separate drive.

You can use the bcdboot command to make it bootable. I don't remember the syntax, Google it.

@spapakons I tried the bcd commands that I use to create the dual boot but didn't work.

bcdedit /export c:\oldstore
bcdedit /createstore c:\emptystore
bcdedit /import c:\emptystore /clean
bcdboot c:\windows

It's not just that. I think you need to use the /f parameter and the /s parameter. See the command here:

Also important, you have to make sure the partition is bootable (aka active), or it won't boot. Check with Disk Manager.

Out of curiosity, I use one of my spare SSD and install Windows To Go 25H2 using Rufus. For Windows to Go, rufus does not create a Windows boot disk as usual, it just install directly to the external SSD. It took 10' from start to finish and run pretty fast.
FYI, My test PC was buid in 2013, unsupported with a 3700K cpu.
Use options as shown below:

If you don't have a spare SSD, backup your current USB SSD, You might be able to use it to retrieve your old software from it
or use Winget to search for old version of the software.
PS. The Windows to go will create a new EFI partition to boot from, so you might be able to restore the The old C: drive with to replace the new C: drive

Thank You all for suggestions and help. I finally give up. The external SSD still boots and I can use it if needed. I'll use it as is until no longer works.

I'm closing this even though it's not really resolved.

I would clone the original disk on a spare one and then I can try whatever I want without taking any risks. If I screw Windows, I would just clone back from the clone to the original disk and no harm done.
