When I start Hyper-V virtual Machine from a shortcut on the Desktop, I get a windows such as the one below:

Screenshot 2025-12-22 173338.webp

The shortcut is, C:\Windows\System32\vmconnect.exe PHANTOM2 "Windows". "Windows" is the VM name.

Is there a switch or argument (something like " /start" or " /launch" or "/run") that I can use to immediately start the VM ? By the way, these arguments don't work.

When I run "vmconnect.exe /?" in command prompt window, I get a short description of what can be used with vmconnect executable. Nothing is in there that helps.

You can change things so vm automatically starts when you boot pc but that uses resources, so generally I would not advise this approach.

You can also start a vm from a powershell script

Thanks for the info and the link.

I tried to use powershell to start the VM. Something happened but I can't see it. The VM did not appear anywhere on the desktop.

I gave the command Stop-VM. Something stopped. O.K. I have to work these commands before I am able to know what they do and where my VM appears. 😊

You could start the VM with PowerShell, and then connect to it with vmconnect.

Start-VM -Name 'VM Name Here' -Passthru | % { vmconnect.exe $_.ComputerName $_.VMName }

If you wanted a shortcut to run that, it would be

powershell.exe -Command "& { Start-VM -Name 'VM Name Here' -Passthru | % { vmconnect.exe $_.ComputerName $_.VMName } }"

Thanks a lot @pseymour

Command run in powershell as admin directly starts the VM in no time.

Shortcut run as admin directly starts the VM in no time.

No extra clicks needed.

Happy computing.

If you put your user account in the "Hyper-V Administrators" group, you shouldn't need admin rights to use Hyper-V.

Thanks again.

I will check that.

For now, in shortcut properties -> Advanced... -> Tick "Run as admin checkbox" is sufficient for me.

I'm a complete PS doofus, so this may be a really stupid question. Why is computername needed here?

Stupid questions are the best questions to ask that lead to best answers, in my opinion. 😊😊. Stupid questions may have many aspects to answer because anyone reading the question may see a different side of it and try to answer accordingly. So you may get a lot of answers in one go. Sometimes, I also think like you after re-reading what I have asked.

Coming to your question, I am not the one to answer your question. As I understand it, you can connect to your VM from your local computer or from a remote computer. So, the VM knows which computer is connected to itself and the resources are allocated to the proper computer accordingly.

I connect to my VM from localhost for testing different Windows 11 iterations for fun. So I used to use C:\Windows\System32\vmconnect.exe PHANTOM2 "Windows" command to connect to the VM. The computer Name PHANTOM2 above is the host computer name where VM is actually located. I could also use the term localhost instead of PHANTOM2. I have never connected to my VM from remote host. The setup and commands may be way too complicated for me to connect to VM from remote host over the internet.

Happy new year and happy computing.
