I have Dell XPS 17, with Windows 10.

What's the easiest way to try Windows 11? One of the Microsoft tools said my laptop is suitable for Win 11.

I have 80 GB free on my hard drive, plus several 2TB HDDs.

A fresh/clean install of Windows 11 on that hard drive will remove all partitions and anything on them as far as I know.

If you want to UPGRADE from 10 to 11, you could do an in-place upgrade. I did it when I first tried Windows 11 as have others, and it worked fine.
⚠️ ALWAYS backup/image your OS first and if you aren't happy then you can go back to the way it was.

The easiest way to try it is to install Windows 11 in a vitual hard drive and create a boot entry for it.

There are guides in the win10/11 forums how to do it.

For testing and trying OSses, both Windows and Linux, I use Oracle VirtualBox, which is installed on my actual system.
It has a learning factor, but is very nice to use. Testing freeware as well in that environment.
You can make so called snapshots to save a certain situation. And delete them if nomore needed.
Of course there are other apps that bring Virtual Systems, VirtualBox is just one of them (and fully freeware!).
In my system I have moved the Virtual Machine location to an extra disk/partition, where it does not bother the system disk.

Remember, you're only allowed 10 days to change your mind, and go back to Windows 10.
Unless ofc, you made a full backup of Windows 10, first.
With a full OS backup of Windows 10, you have all the time in the world. :-)

I do Macrium backups several times per day.

Not because I'm elderly and make numerous mistakes, you understand. I just like making backups.

Windows has a default 10 day go back period which can be modified to 60 days.

With backup images it's usually no longer needed to rely on Windows features / capabilities.

There are also evaluation VMs that expire after some time. They are Enterprise edition VMs, but that shouldn't matter if you're just checking out Windows 11.

If you make a backup image of your Windows 10 and store it like on an external hard drive, it is always available to restore, no matter how much time has past.

I'd second that, a native boot .vhdx file for the virtual drive is an easy way to dual boot. Here's a tutorial....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine.

For the Windows partition and a Data partition, I do full Macriums and Diffs every 2 days to alternate HDDs.

I equate moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11, like my moving from Illinois to Florida 36 years ago. There WAS no going back!!!

Likewise when I decided to move my daily OS from Win-10 to Win-11, I packed up all my goodies, for safe keeping and did a Clean install of Windows 11, completely Rufusized of course.
Since that day, I've reinstalled Win-11 several times, using smaller and faster versions from X-lite. *

* On a 12 yr old PC, even with 16GB of Crucial RAM, and a Crucial SSD, I still want the Fastest OS I can get, and....
Windows Optimum 11, 24H2, V4.2 is the smallest and fastest OS I've ever used since DOS 6.22.

Both the download of the ISO and the install to my PC, took less than 10 minutes, ea.

Once you'd try this OS, I can't believe you'd ever want to go back to Windows 10, any version or build.

I'm satisfied with my Win11 upgrade :-)

For the benefit of Win10 users who might be considering the upagrade, I can say that my installation has about 95% of MY Win10 look-and-feel (which in turn had most of the Win7 look and feel).

That's all due to inherited add-ons such as:

- StartAllBack
- Explorer Patcher
- 7+ TaskbarTweaker

I'm sure there are other add-ons, but they are not listed in:

- Start button > R-click > List of installed apps

My Start button is a blue "plus" icon at extreme left. It shows all the options that were displayed in the rightmost column of the Win7 start button. (Which displayed the most recently installed items in the leftmost column - a clever feature.)

As in Win7, Firefox tabs are visible on the taskbar, with one icon per tab. That's probably due to my Win10 addons - such as Taskbar Tweaker and ExplorerPatcher.

In fact, I don't see ANY of the default Win11 half-dozen or so taskbar icons, each of which needs to be clicked several times in order to reveal hidden secrets. With my doubtful memory, I might have spent most of the time clicking the wrong icon.

I'd like to warn you, that mixing add-ons StartAllback (SAB) and ExplorerPatcher (EP) can give unpredictable effects!
They both go deep into the Windows system and there is no garantee at all that you can use them both in the same system.

I did use combination of EP and OpenShell (OS) without problems, because OS only is used for tweaking the start menu, while EP is used for tweaking the taskbar. Never had problems with that combination. And at this moment I am using the combination od SAB and OS, with the same purpose (SAB for the taskbar, OS for the start menu). No problems at all.

But I would not dare to use SAB and EP at the same time in the same system. Problems all over can be expected!
