How?
Not sure, but I had an old copy of MSDE 2000 which I tried to install and win 11 popped a warning saying it cant run

Did it somehow come by that?

Any quick way to test for MSSQL, to see if it acrually is functional?

It is installed because there is a dependency on it it. Some app you are using (or have used in the past) uses sql database and called for it. I believe one such app that uses it is Visual Studio. There are more.

MSDE 2000 ??
Probably has much 16-bit code in it, so won't install on 64-bit Windows.. but MSSQL (32-bit) is probably installed (as mentioned) due to dependencies.
You can test it by using some of the MSSQL installed tools... ?

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

yeah, got it working in my program.
I then installed SqlServer 2019 and it comes with management studio.
I setup myself as a user and used mixed mode authentication, and can happily say, I logged in both ways to my program.
I also had to when using user and password, not windows authentication, had to assign myself privileges to manage databases, otherwise nothing is allowed.

So yeah, was pleasantly surprised to see me able to setup sql server on my PC and see somethng work well that I programmed 20 yrs ago and back then was not fully able to test.

All my users run MySQL. With the old MSDE it works the same but I was only able to use windows authentication with my program.
