I am familiar with Windows operating system and have been using it since Win 95. However recently my Windows 11 started freezing out of no where. It never freezes when I am using it, and only would freeze when I put it into lock screen over night. Usually freezes after about 20-30 min. Its completely unresponsive:

The time shown on lock screen is about 20-30 min after I lock the computer

Keyboard lights on, but when pressing Caps Lock, nothing changes

mouse does not move

event log does not show ANY error, there was no log between 4/24 9:25PM till the next morning when I power reset at 7:26AM. The computer died at 9:53PM because that is what the lock screen's time was showing.

The funny thing is the performance is not impacted - the computer works just fine when its not idling.

System Model ASROCK X570 Taichi
Processor AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core Processor, 3401 Mhz, 16 Core(s), 32 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 64.0 GB
and a
2TB NVMe SSD.

Any thoughts here guys?

Hi,
Welcome to the forum, please fill in your specs in your profile when you have time.

My guess would be to check the power settings as something seems to go to sleep out of sequence locking the system up, making it unable to recover.
Can you provide a bit more info about those settings?
Also, check in devices to see what turns off after a given time.

Please would you post the response to this command
PowerCfg -a
so that your available power states can be considered.
And please explain any attempts you have made to change those available power states.
- I found, just for example, that disabling S0 Modern standby on one computer caused chaos and the computer froze when it attempted to use S3 Sleep instead.
- On another computer, it was perfectly happy with disabling S0 Modern standby.

What does your power plan have as its time to wait for:-
- Turn off the display
- Sleep
- Hibernate
and do any of these times match the times it freezes.

All the best,
Denis

OK, that's all normal.
I assume you have never tried to alter those power-sleep states. You would definitely remember if you had.

And the times set in your power options?

Just to save a bit of time, I am bound to suggest reinstalling your display driver [reinstalling not just checking for updates]. There's no diagnostic test for display driver corruption being the cause of problems so the reinstallation would just eliminate it as a potential cause.
Your computer maker should provide the latest display driver for download. If you bought & fitted the display adapter separately from the rest of the computer then you'd go to its maker for drivers instead.

Never going to sleep. hard drive turns off after 30 min is the only option which doesnt align with the time.

I did read it somewhere that it might be caused by a Display cable which I did not recently change. I switched to an HDMI and shortly i got a reboot. I inspected the Memory.dmp, and it showed

DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (133), The DPC watchdog detected a prolonged run time at an IRQL of DISPATCH_LEVEL.

I cant upload the DMP as its over 2 gig.

The interesting thing here is that - it NEVER freezes when the computer is in use. only when i stop moving the mouse and keyboard OR locking the computer via Win + L

Sorry, I was still typing my last post when you replied.

It's always possible for a hardware fault to cause problems but the display driver is definitely a more likely cause.

I don't understand what you are saying in, "Never going to sleep. hard drive turns off after 30 min is the only option which doesnt align with the time."
Do either of the Power options display off time / sleep time match the times it freezes?

I don't know anything about Dmp files.

If it was my computer, I'd reinstall the display driver as I mentioned in the last bit of my last post.

Best of luck,
Denis

Thanks! The computer is in high performance mode for sleep settings so the computer never goes to sleep except for the hard drive, which goes to sleep after 30m of idling. I did reinstall the display driver to the newest but that did not help. I have a RTX 3080

Aside from display driver, what would be the most likely hardware failure? Since nothing is in the logs, I suspect its a hardware failure, mostly related to the video card.

I'm sorry, I'm out of sensible ideas.
Try not locking it to see if the problem can be tied down to that.
Try not letting the disk turn off to see if the problem can be tied down to that.

Best of luck,
Denis

Dump files have to be uploaded to a cloud provider with a link posted here. Since you have not completed your system specs in your forum profile, we do not know what hardware you are working with. It would help us help you if you would do that.

I would reseat the video card and the ram. Some manufacturers have diagnostics usually accessible in the BIOS... like Dell. I would run that also.

For 40+ years, I've been reminding my customers that a PC is like any other appliance or electric shop tool.
When you're using it, of course it needs to be ON, but when you're not using it, then it will respect you if you just turn it OFF, and let it rest.

Sleep? Hibernate? Not in my house!

Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

IMO there are too many unanswered questions to assume and that's exactly what has been done thus far when not enough info has been provided by the OP nor do we know what troubleshooting steps, if any, has been done..

You say there are no events posted in event viewer. However, events are only one small portion of gathering logs. No V2 logs have been posted.

There's usually no quick and easy fix for such issues so it takes time and perserverance to get to the bottom of the problem. Once all the logs are collected @zbook or one of the others experienced in analyzing logs will guide you further.
