I cant open files from previous user

I encrypted a folder has files and I installed new windows 11 but now when I try to open any files I get error that I dont have permission. How i can open these files ?

Well - the point of encryption is to stop anybody doing what you are asking.

How did you encrypt the data?

Could you please provide some details? I'll take my best guesses here, but some detail would have been helpful. If I am guessing incorrectly regarding the details, please correct me.

How? BitLocker, EFS, something else? Is the folder still encrypted or can you unlock that folder at all? It sounds like you are saying that you can see the files, so if you are using BitLocker that would indicate that the volume is unlocked, but not necessarily for other encryption methods.

You noted in the title that these files are "from previous user". Does that mean that this user no longer exists so that they can give you access to the files?

If the issue is purely permissions you could try these steps. Note that you need to run these commands from an elevated command prompt (as an admin):

C:\windows\system32\takeown /f "C:\MyFolder\*.*" /r /d y
icacls "C:\MyFolder\*.*" /T /grant %username%:F

In the above 2 commands, replace C:\MyFolder\*.* with the path you want to gain access to.

I used efs

I can get inisde the folder and see encrypted files with lock icon on them

My old user is gone because problem in windows i had to reinstall windows

I am able to into encrypted folder and see encrypted files but i can not see contect or modify

I tried the commands now
C:\windows\system32\takeown /f "C:\MyFolder\*.*" /r /d y
icacls "C:\MyFolder\*.*" /T /grant %username%:F

They executed successfuly but i still cant open any file to see content

Due to different user, permissions, and the way encryption is designed to work, I'd wager you can't open them. IMO If you could you would be going against the entire premise of the way encryption is designed to protect data in the first place. But if you can, you'll be in high demand on the dark web. Seriously though, it's for this very reason, I stay as far away from encryption as I can get. Good luck.

Okay, so those files are locked using something other than BitLocker.

Right-click on one of those files and select "properties", then on "Advanced".



Check to see the option to "Encrypt contents to secure data" is selected.



If this is selected, then EFS (Encrypting File System) is enabled. You will need your saved EFS Encryption Key in order to recover these files. See this tutorial:

I have certificate backup for efs but how i can use it ?
