I thought Macrium did not include the recycle bin in Full images

Today I created a Full image of my ASUS device and thought "That's too big at 83.14 GB".
I checked in the recycle bin and saw that it contained a lot of stuff so I emptied it and ran another Full image and it was 77.86 GB.

Any thoughts?

There are a lot of other potential reasons why the backup size might have been so different and we can get into those later but in the meantime can I just suggest this...

Take the first backup that you did, the one that you said was 83.14 GB in size, and mount that backup using Macrium Reflect. Once it's mounted you can go in and see whether the recycle bin contents are in fact actually there or not. That will at least answer whether or not the recycle bin contents are even present in your backup.

From memory with restores Macrium does indeed back up and restore the bin. You will notice a restore does not restore the index file (applies to any backup software) and consequently that rebuilds in the background following a restore.

Today I created a Full image of my ASUS device and thought "That's too big at 83.14 GB".

What is the total combined size of all partitions you are backing up?

For example I backup my C and D partitions. That adds up to about 83GB excluding any smaller hidden partitions related to the operating system. Say another 1GB for all those:

The Macrium image for all that comes in at around 50GB.

If you are using the free version of Macrium then any restore is a full restore rather than a delta type restore meaning on the free version you get a complete restore, the drive is wiped and rebuilt. The delta restore (paid version) is much faster and only replaces the bits (literally) that have changed. The full restore can see the effects of trim and so on being applied and I have memories that restored images can sometimes seem to vary in the expected size a little. Sometimes it might be down to the way Windows reports free space as a day or so later it can jump back with no obvious reason. I don;t see that with delta restores.

The big question though is not whether the backup is too big but how much are you backing up in the first place. Only then can we see if an image is to big (which would be doubtful).

By default Reflect excludes System Restore points, swapfile.sys, pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys. This is true for Reflect v8 and Reflect X. All other files are included unless you specifically add an exclusion yourself. This is done in a GUI option in Reflect X, it can also be done by editing the registry as an alternative. For v8 the registry option is the only one available.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.
