Don't try this unless you're brave and have a fresh backup (or a Copilot+ PC ).


The In-Place Upgrade actually worked.
I downloaded 26100.1586 from UUP Dump, and then did the In-Place Upgrade.

After it finished I check the OS Build. It was 24H2 but only 26100.1
So I went to Windows Updates.

The 24H2 WU for Insiders, failed.
So I tried the one for Copilot+ PCs. KB5041585. That one broke Windows.
It installed, but after the reboot, Windows Explorer and desktop icons were just flashing on and off.
Taskbar never showed up.

It's a GOOD thing I made a fresh backup before attempting this. :-)



Things that changed after the In-Place Upgrade...

1. It added "Home" back into File Explorer (just above ThisPC). And the tutorial for removing "Home" didn't work.
2. It changed all my "classic" shortcut arrows to the huge default Win 11 arrows.
3. It made EDGE the default browser, which really upset Firefox.
4. It upgraded Notepad (which I didn't want).
5. Along with some useful image extensions, it added a few Apps, again. (made short work of those with REVO).
6. It added the Recovery partition back, after I had removed it on Win 11.

Those were all the changes I noticed.



Now I'm back on 22631.4037. :cool:

Short version... the In-Place Upgrade worked fine. The 24H2 Windows Updates didn't.
My CPU has the SSE 4.2 instruction set.

That's what you get for being impatient and early adopter. The general release is only a couple of months away. That said, I will first try it on a virtual machine or some other computer before upgrading mine. Also it is a known annoyance that every upgrade resets all customizations. I have replaced the flat Windows 11 system icons with those from Windows 8.1 using Customizer God and Resource Hacker. It is annoying every cumulative update or upgrade to a newer version all these are reset and I have to customize them again.

I suspect your upgrade attempt would have been entirely successful had you used an Insider 24H2 ISO such as 26100.1150.

And install it to a blank SSD, like I did.
Then install your programs, like I did.
And then, just enjoy it, like I did.

But, OH, I forgot, you're tied to MS's apron strings.
Too bad that you have to rely on MR backups.

So 26100.1586 gave you 26100.1. That would seem to suggest it's a Insider RP build.

You should give it a go with a Copilot+ RTM build, say 26100.1457. If successful, WU should give you 26100.1591.
If it doesn't work (unlikely) then use your "Get Out Of Jail Free" card.

Yes, but 26100.1586 was never released for downloading on the Insider download site. It currently has 26100.1150 if you wish to check. Getting the ISO from UUDump is the likely explanation for your experience.

Tried that too... that didn't work at all.
That's why I opted for the UUP Dump version and tried the In-Place Upgrade.

I in-place upgraded with 26100.994 obtained from UUPDump. Been getting Windows Updates ever since.

It may have been, but MS didn't require or demand that I join the IP, so I didn't.
Since then, my builds have been in lockstep with the Copilot+ PC's through WU.

I've been using the 26100.x series for quite a while now and it has been trouble free for me so far. Every time a new update comes along, I install it. I have no loss of functionality or any problems whatsoever EXCEPT that I see the ugly black and white color scheme in task manager that others have reported. But I can live with that.

Or you can install Explorer Patcher or Open Shell to change the taskbar appearance.

There was a similar bug in an older Windows 11 build. Thankfully it was fixed by a newer update. If I remember correctly you can also get the old style Task Manager by installing the respective Winaero utility.
