OS
Windows 11 Pro 64bit
Testing an in-place repair of Win 11 for future use (repair or to upgrade to an newer build if required) & have come across a problem:
2D8C3255-DE4E-44F6-8C97-0CA6F1FB51F5.jpeg
The laptop then rolled back to Win 11 & showed:
5EBF231A-EDC4-427B-9059-1029E5D5F653.jpeg
SSD is fine at 96% OK. No problem after chkdsk. I’ve removed external HDD. Running Windows Defender & MalwareBytes premium (currently doing the in-place repair after disabling MB & turning off self protection). The laptop is not Win 11 compatible - TPM & Secure boot OK, the CPU is not supported).
I would prefer not to try a clean boot if possible. If there isn’t a simple solution then I’ll go back to Windows 10.

Thanks in advance.

Hello @Bastet, :-)

The issue could be from the laptop not being compatible with Windows 11. It may be failing the check during setup.

Hello @Bastet, :)

The issue could be from the laptop not being compatible with Windows 11. It may be failing the check during setup.
Thanks Brink. I’d already upgraded to win 11 via the registry hack, I also removed mentioned in another post from the USB installation media.
Disabling MB & turning off self protection I now get a different error:
BDC04A39-F875-4E65-ADBE-FBABFFA20503.jpeg
All drivers are up to date - especially graphics drivers - but there’s no BIOS update available.

@Bastet,

Error 0xC1900101 – 0x4000D is usually from bad or incompatible drivers. The fun part is finding out which one.

LOL

The 1900101 indicates that the computer has already rolled back to Windows 10.

If the computer specifications do not meet the Microsoft update / upgrade criteria for Windows 11 they are designed to rollback.

The in place upgrade presented with the BSOD bugcheck 4.

Only for interest you can run V2 and the bugcheck debugged to see if there was any non-Microsoft driver causing the BSOD.

If it was a Microsoft driver then little will learned from the bugcheck.

Also you can run setupdiag to see what it found.

And for more detailed log collection of the Panther files you can run:

The second upgrade failure displayed a different error code but it too is often related to a problematic driver.

Why not try clean boot?

Logs can be collected but it takes time to troubleshoot them.

Brief summary:
currently running Windows 11 Pro which was successfully upgraded from Windows 10 Pro. As the laptop is not compatible with this OS I decided to test an in-place repair in case this was ever required to upgrade to a new build. repair failed with the BSOD error messages already posted.
Purchased laptop around 5 years ago.
No overclocking. No warranty.
All drivers are up to date AFAIK.
Under Windows 10 I have no problem running an in-place repair.
SetupDiag File too large to upload so it's on my Mediafire account: Setup Diagnostics [2022-03-31_at_23-38-21]
V2 Log attached.

The Macrium reflect tracking file was reported as corrupt.

Consider reinstalling the software /making a new backup image.

During the crash there was no mini or memory or live kernel files created.

A setupmem.dmp was created with bugcheck 4.

See if you can reinstall the Intel chipset drivers and uninstall the printer drivers.

IASTORAC.SYS

Then perform another update > post new logs if there is another dump or rollback.

Still no dice. uninstalled Macrium completely using revo & uninstalled the Printer drivers. Uninstalled Intel(R) 100 Series/C230 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller & deleted the driver which installed the default/an older driver on restart.

I’ve had to roll back to yesterday’s image due to a problem, should I uninstall Macrium & the printer drivers & roll back the Intel driver again as well?

Please keep the computer as it is now.

Once you can confirm recovery options: safe mode, system restore etc. then you can start Windows Driver Verifier (WDV).

This should rule in / rule out driver related problems.

If it's a problematic driver then in most cases this should fix the failed upgrade repair.

If it's more than a driver then it could be time consuming.

Done the scans. Reagent stated that it can't find the path specified.
Will now run driver verifier. Btw is there any indication of when it has finished testing? I understand it should bluescreen/blackscreen if there’s a problem, if there’s not then I assume I would need to stop it manually.

If there’s no solution from these logs & DV I’ll return to Windows 10.

Could you please check if there is a dump file called setupmem.dmp in the following directories:

Rich (BB code):
%SystemDrive%\$Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback
%WinDir%\Panther\NewOS\Rollback

The V2 log collector had displayed that the recovery partition was disabled.
The image displayed that it was enabled.
Somewhere there was a command that had converted it from disabled to enabled.

Windows driver verifier is designed to stress test the drivers.

If there is a misbehaving driver the computer will crash.

If a dump file is created it can be debugged.

Misbehaving drivers can be uninstalled or uninstalled and reinstalled.

The tool will then be restarted with modified customized settings.

Plan to run the tool in the background for approximately 48 hours.

There may be performance problems while running the tool.

If there are performance problems or very slow boot please comment into this thread and the customized tests can be modified.

After any BSOD please post a new V2.

If there is no immediate BSOD after starting the tool please run the administrative command prompt command:
verifier /querysettings

I don't think an In-Place upgrade is going to work... with a generic ISO.
Because you are doing this on a non-compatible comp, you will probably have to use an ISO that doesn't "do" the compatibility checks.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
No BSOD so far.
Settings attached.
cmd prompt shows RE is enabled.
I did use EaseUS partition manager to extend the recovery partition as after Win 11 upgrade from 10 it showed red.
EaseUS still shows it is entitled 'recovery partition' How would I enable it again?
