Inside the Windows 1.0 40th anniversary reunion

 GeekWire News:

Tracking down a far-flung team for a 40-year reunion isn’t easy. But the people who worked on Windows 1.0 got some help from their younger selves: a mischievous Easter egg they hid long ago in the software that would become the foundation of the world’s dominant PC platform.

Back in the mid-1980s, before the product launched, they secretly inserted credits in the code, listing their names, to be revealed through a specific combination of keystrokes.

As the story goes, Bill Gates inadvertently found the list by slamming his fists on the keyboard in frustration over the system’s sluggishness, a discovery that only made things worse. The fix: make the sequence more obscure. It worked. The credits went unnoticed by the public until 2022, when a researcher who was reverse-engineering old Windows binaries found them.

When members of the Windows 1.0 team decided to hold a 40th anniversary reunion this year, that roster became their starting point. It was a time capsule that doubled as a guest list.

A core group from that original Windows team reunited over dinner at Steve Ballmer’s offices in Bellevue on Tuesday evening — trading memories, correcting the historical record, and marveling at what they accomplished back then under nearly impossible circumstances.

“Today, developers have all these tools, drag and drop,” said Rao Remala, an early Windows developer, adding that he would challenge anyone today to build a functioning PC operating environment under the 64K segment limits and other technical constraints of the era.

“Have you tried it in ChatGPT?” Ballmer joked from across the room.

This year has been filled with commemorative milestones for the tech giant, from Microsoft’s 50th to Excel’s 40th to the 30th anniversary of the company’s internet pivot. But this one is different. It’s a glimpse into one of Microsoft’s scrappiest projects, from a moment in its history when key resources — including budget and computing power — were far more scarce.

Microsoft’s landmark platform

Windows 1.0, which shipped on a set of 5.25-inch floppy disks, was technically considered an operating environment, not an operating system, because it ran on MS-DOS 2.0.

Microsoft announced it was developing Windows in November 1983. The release was delayed as the team worked through leadership turnover, technical challenges, and user-interface debates (i.e., tiled vs. overlapping windows), giving rise to industry accusations of peddling “vaporware.” Windows 1.0 finally debuted on Nov. 20, 1985.

I still have Windows 3.11 for Workgroups as VM somewhere -- it was the ist really (at that time) reliable version of Windows for Networking in an office -- I think it used Novel LAN for the networking and still ran under Ms DOS - but Word for Windows , and EXCEL were the real "Killer apps".

I remember the difficulty of connecting a PC up to an IBM mainframe too for file transfer from Office to the mainframe (IBM 370 running MVS/SP JES2).

IBM's office thing was PROFS which was the ultimate in hideousness so we used Ms's versions of spreadsheet (EXCEL) etc.

You had to use a "Token ring" card for connectivity -- We used PCMIA type cards this was a thing about the size of a credit card with an adapter for the PC to connect-- but whatever one says about Windows it's usually possible to get any known piece of hardware on the planet (or maybe in the universe) to work with it !!!.

Happy Birthday both Windows and Office.

Where I went to school in Greenfield, NH, we usually used Windows 3.1x, until upgraded to Windows 95 or Windows 98.

Yeah, I was in Greenfield from July 5, 1994 (13) until November 11, 2002 (22)
1994-1997=I usually saw Windows 3.1 installed, even on the Pentium 166 MHz.

I sucked at PCs until 1997. Even when I knew some Windows 3x and DOS in 1996.

Of course as stated in blog, W1.0 was really MS DOS with a fancy gui. All it really did was give shortcuts to running DOS and was pretty unreliable crashing more than it was worth.

It was an attempt to emulate Apple's gui already out for 2 years.

Its only saving grace was it allowed for some easier multitasking but pcs of that era could barely run one decent app letalone multiple apps.

I remember trying it and preferred to use MS DOS directly.

Windows 2 was not much better.

Windows 3.1 was more stable but still a fancy DOS based gui.

It was not until 8 years later in 1993 when windows NT (primarily targeted at commercisl companies) became a true OS. This was followed by Windows 95 primarily targeted at domestic users in 1995.

NT was revolutionary and is really the true ancestor of all modern Windows 32bit versions.

The next main shift was to 64bit (XP had a 64bit version but Vista was the first mainstream 64 bit designed OS.

Vista was a good OS ahead of its time but hardware was largely inadequate to use it optimally plus it overdid security features making it complicated to use. Windows 7 was really Vista+ sorting out some of the issues that made Vista hard to use.

To some extent W7 was a cul de sac as it was largely rebuilt to give Windows 8 which failed due to MS making it difficult to use with a crappy gui design with no start menu. However technically, W8 was far superior and eventually became the ancestor of W10/11.

Will we ever see 128 bit pcs? All conventional wisdom says we do not need it but I rather believe the only limit to what we can achieve with pcs is only limited by our imagination and that our imagination is only limited by the hardware available.

Here is an interesting thought. PI has an infinite number of digits and no recurring pattern has ever been found. It is mind boggling to think that theoretically a sequence of everybody's phone number must exist somewhere within Pi's infinite digits.

Of course, you would need some megapower to prove that but who knows 😁.

NT was revolutionary and is really the true ancestor of all modern Windows 32bit versions.
Not until Windows 2000 for most. (First NT5x release) Windows 95, 98 and ME were not NT. But Windows 95 introduced the ability for full 32-bit mainstream application support. Unlike 3.0 and 3.1, it wasn't just a better GUI.
