Hey folks,

I created the latest bootable USB via the Media Creation Tool (MCT) - Download Windows 11

20241015_134309 (Medium).jpg

However, I am suddenly encountering above issue in all the Ryzen-based devices I have:
  • HP Omen 15 (Ryzen 7 4800H)
  • Beelink SER5 Pro (Ryzen 7 5800H)
  • Beelink SER7 (Ryzen 7 7840HS)
I have done fresh installations on the same devices multiple times prior using an older Win11 build from MCT and have never encountered the issue. Unfortunately, I have overwritten that old Win11 build to create the latest USB.

I am familiar with the RST issue in Intel 11g but I have not encountered this issue before on my Ryzen devices before. I have also not changed any of the BIOS config since the last successfull Win11 fresh install.

Still without making changes to the BIOS, a workaround I found is to create a Win10 bootable USB instead. It detected all drives no problem and was able to initiate the Win10 installation.

The issue has also been popping up in reddit recently and in this case, an ASUS mobo with AMD is also involved.
  1. Is this a rather "new" issue with the latest Win11 MCT on AMD (what Win11 build is it)? I have doubts on the RAID assumption as suggested by some in reddit due to Win10 detecting the drives just fine. Anyone who knows more, please feel free to share your thoughts here.
  2. As a (hopefully) better workaround, may someone be able to point me to a safe download of Win11 22H2/23H2 and your tried-and-tested tool to create a bootable USB? I have only ever used MCT for USB installers. It is a bit more convenient to fresh install using an older Win11 than use Win10 and upgrade.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, the BIOS is pretty locked down on this example (HP Omen 15) and I am unable to see any option relating to RAID. Given that the same issue also happens in 2 other Ryzen's that have never encountered the issue before, it's rather mysterious why it's suddenly appearing now. The only manipulated variable is the updated Win11 MCT, all other conditions prior remained the same.

Hello @k_rollo and welcome to ElevenForum. :-)

Microsoft has been messing around with the Windows 11 "install".
The problems you're describing don't seem to show up when doing an In-Place Upgrade, using an ISO created with the MCT.

Most of the regulars on here use 3rd party backup software or VMs.
So there's generally no need to do clean installs of Windows 11.

We continuously recommend using 3rd party backup software.
When you get a new computer... make a full OS backup. Then, if anything weird happens, just restore from the backup.

Before making any major changes, or even before Windows updates or upgrades... make a fresh backup.

I realize this doesn't necessarily help with your current problem, but I felt it needed mentioned.

No prob. I always check and recheck if I have any doubt at all. It may be a problem with your installation media. You can try downloading the full all edition iso directly from MS without using the MCT. I don't know if it will help the situation but it something else to try just in case the one created with MCT is a dud. . The iso can be burned to a usb using Rufus. Scroll down to "download Windows 11 Disk Image" here.

Rufus download is at the bottom of this page.. It is a portable app. Follow the screenshot there to set Rufus options. . Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

On the iso created using MCT, you did create that media on another Windows system, right? (not a MAC).

Hi @Ghot , thanks for the welcome!

Microsoft has been messing around with the Windows 11 "install".
Oh dear, that's probably why. 🫠 Thanks for letting me know!

Not a stranger to fresh OS installs since WinXP, but I definitely agree with the full image backup as best practice. For context, I'm selling my Ryzen machines.

I'll test another theory as mentioned here also by downloading the ISO associated with the MCT instead (rather than directly creating the USB) and making a bootable using Rufus, which appears to be the community's preferred tool. Will report back on results.

Yeah... it seems Microsoft has been coming up with lots of new ideas.
I don't see that they are considering all the consequences of those new ideas though. :(

Hi @glasskuter , this is indeed a viable next step and will try that next.

Yup, I created the installation media (multiple times as well) using my other HP Omen 16 that is itself on Win11 Home 23H2.

Looks like the workaround for now is still the Win10 MCT then in-place upgrade. Thank you both for trying to help. Cheers!

Hi, welcome 🙏

Have you downloaded Rufus 4.5 or Beta 4.6?
Rufus 4.5 isn't setup properly for 24H2, Beta 4.6 has been tweaked

Also, there has been mention that disconnecting from the internet during the in-place process, has solved some problems with driver errors

Hi @antspants , I have gotten the Rufus 4.5 Portable and used that to flash the Win11 24H2 ISO on the USB.

Also, there has been mention that disconnecting from the internet during the in-place process, has solved some problems with driver errors

I'm keeping this in mind should I proceed with the in-place upgrade. I'm also thinking of just keeping it Win10 out-of-the-box and letting the buyer decide to upgrade as an option.

Right now, I am making a (final) attempt at Win11 installation by downloading Win11 23H2 from "UUP dump" and making a bootable drive with Rufus 4.5. In theory, they are the last known versions to work together. Will update with the outcome.

I have gotten the Rufus 4.5 Portable and used that to flash the Win11 24H2 ISO on the USB.
As I mentioned above, Rufus 4.5 won’t work, use 4.6 beta

And for an in place upgrade if you choose to do that instead, using 4.5 you’ll need to follow the instructions under where it says “PREVIOUSLY” on this page

So use Rufus 4.6 beta

Sorry, I should clarify my post

Rufus 4.5 is “less likely” to work with a fresh install.

Rufus 4.6 has been tweaked for 24H2

  • Add a new setup.exe wrapper to bypass Windows 11 24H2 in-place upgrade restrictions (#2568)
  • Add TimeZone to regional options replication (#2499)
  • Set local account passwords to not expire by default
  • Fix an error when trying to write compressed VHD images (#2468)
  • Fix an error when invoking Rufus from the PowerShell commandline (#2556)
  • Improve revoked UEFI bootloaders check to support Linux SBAT, Windows SVN and cert DBX

For an In-Place Upgrade:

Rufus 4.5 will NOT work

Rufus 4.6 will

Hi @antspants , note I have gotten Rufus 4.5 and made the 24H2 bootable before you came into the thread. I was just informing you of the previous action. Though looking around other relevant threads, it appears 24H2 is a litany of issues for multiple users recently. 🙃

If I get 23H2 working, I'll stick to that one for a while. Making the bootable USB now as we speak.

What edition of Windows are you trying to install (Home, Pro, or something else)? Also, is this the US English version?

If you don't mind trying this, I'd like to whip up a quick ISO image for you that I have patched in a way that will likely get around this.

The version that you download from the MCT would be build 26100.1742. If you have a strong preference for this edition, I can provide that, but I would suggest getting to you the latest build (26100.2152) .

If this is okay with you, let me know and I'll drop this on OneDrive for you along with some quick instructions.

Hi @hsehestedt , I'm trying to install Win11 Pro en-GB.

The version that you download from the MCT would be build 26100.1742.

Thank you for answering that question. ☺️

Appreciate your offer, that's very kind of you. I don't have a strong preference for the latest version.

Good news is 23H2 (from UUP Dump) created with Rufus 4.5 (stable) went through:

20241015_191501.jpg

I'm happy to stick with this version for a while as a solution to avoid any further hassle. Cheers!

I created the latest bootable USB via the Media Creation Tool (MCT) - Download Windows 11
I had a similar issue with the 24H2 MCTs released on 1 October; however, MS have updated them recently - see here - and they now seem to be OK.

I would suggest that you re-run the your Bootable USB creation and try again.

Hi @IanMosley , I actually created the 24H2 MCT today 15-Oct and that's the photo you see in the very first post. I don't mind sticking to 23H2 for the time being. :-)

I had the same issue on the installer. I was flashing the win 11 ISO using balena etcher but that creates a UDF filesystem but the installer needs fat32. Using ventoy resolved the issue

I registered for the forum just to comment that this was my issue too. I used Balena Etcher to make a USB and once I switched to Rufus it worked like a charm. Thank you for the tip!
