Install "Update" to Win11 or is Fresh install absolute?

The product key for windows 10 will work for windows 11. Chances are that the product key is embedded in the BIOS or the system will activate with a digital license.

If you have made backup images and saved the images to another disk drive or the cloud then you can restore an image.

Once a computer with Windows 10 has performed updates the licensing information is entered into Microsoft servers.

This enables the clean install of either Windows 10 or 11 with the same edition (home or pro).

You don't say what your system is, but if it came with W10 Pro pre-installed by the OEM then it has a Pro key embedded in the bios. That key is valid for Windows 10/11. Setup will find it and use it in a clean install.

If you built the PC yourself and installed and activated W10 Pro, then it has a digital licence on Microsoft's activation servers. This is also valid for Windows 10/11. You can clean install W11 Pro and skip entering a key if asked. It will activate from the existing digital licence as soon as it can contact the activation servers.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Didnt end up making a restore backup image or anything. There are a few problems affecting the speed and performance that will, for now, be adequately addressed with a full format instead of just update. I will be getting a new laptop in January or Feb.
I apologize @Bree, my current OS is Win10 Pro.

So, Steps: create boot thumb drive for win11, Format, insert thumb drive and install windows 11, and use Windows 10 Pro key, and the system will automatically unlock Win11 Pro?

You don't need to use any key. When asked for a key, just skip or select "I don't have a key". As your computer once had Win 10 pro it has a "Digital License" and will activate.
