Solved Install Windows on a laptop problem

I'm just going to disable, re-arrange things, reboot, and re-enable, as outlined by @Bree
Seems a lot easier to me.

I already made the initial Macrium Reflect backup.

I can post screenshot pics, this afternoon. She doesn't wake up till late. :/

I'm really sick of command prompt/diskpart. It's 2026, it should have had a GUI (when within Windows), long ago.
Or they should upgrade Disk Management, so all this diskpart stuff isn't needed, when within Windows.

When you think about it, Windows is really messed up.
We shouldn't have to find and install 3rd party programs to do all the things we need done.

Microsoft hammer.webp

There's really no need to delete the extra recovery partitions unless you want to free up the small amount of disk space they occupy.

Make sure you know which partition is the current restore partition before you disable it and delete/rearrange the others. That is the one you should keep, even if you disable recovery.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

According to Google AI, "only" the real Recovery partition will empty, when I disable.
And that I should be able to see in Minitool.

Three elderly women, all hard of hearing and talking loudly, all at the same time... and a crazy part chihuahua puppy, means I'll take the risk. I have a MR backup.

I won't be able to do anything for About 7 hours from now, but when I do... screenshots and an update.

If your goal is to extend C:, there's little point in deleting the extra recovery partitions without also deleting the partition between C: and the first recovery partition.

Image.webp

The following is just an example; you can also use third-party partition management software.

1. Disable WinRE:

reagentc /disable

To verify that the Winre.wim file is present in the C:\Windows\System32\Recovery folder, run the following command in PowerShell:

Get-ChildItem -Force "C:\Windows\System32\Recovery"

reagentc disable.webp

2. Delete the unnecessary partitions:

Delete all three partitions located between C: and D:, as well as the last recovery partition. These recovery partitions cannot normally be deleted in Disk Management, but they can be deleted using DiskPart (delete partition override).

3. Extend the partitions:

Extend C: and D: using DiskPart or Disk Management.

4. Recreate the recovery partition:

diskpart
select volume c
shrink desired=1200
create partition primary size=1200

format fs=ntfs quick
set id=DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC
gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001
exit

5. Re-enable WinRE and check its status:

reagentc /enable
reagentc /info
