When reading MS explanation of Interrupt Request Levels that reads like a foreign language,I don't think there is any "easy to understand" English. It definitely WAY above my intelligence level. I've always suspected it was such a deep subject, there was no way anyone could put it in "English".

Thanks @glasskuter Any simple explanation will do :D I have had this error only twice in 18 months. It appears to be when I am modding a game (these are only made by normal folk and do contain a lot of errors) and I think it occurs when you get stuck in a place and can't move. It is no big deal, as I am sure it's the mod's fault, I was just curious

can someone please tell me in easy to understand English what IRQL Not Less or Equal means thanks
Very difficult, may need PhD in Comp. Science.

Simplest it can mean:- the Interrupt request (IRQ) is not being serviced by the OS scheduler because the IRQ priority number is too high , and a continual stream of lower level interrupt requests are blocking execution. Possibly if the IRQ is starved from completion and fails to complete by deadline then the OS flags a BSOD.

Seems to indicate that your "game mod" sends more low level IRQs to gain performance, thus starving the service of the high level IRQs. Upload your log, and we shall see.

The best I can do for you in terms of what the term means is not even mine, but a copy and paste from someone else. (Like I said, outside my intelligence range) Typically a memory related error that occurs if a system process or a device driver seeks access to a memory address for which it lacks valid access rights. Memory allocations for processes usually have an upper bound address, so the “NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL” part refers to an attempt to access an address outside (greater than) that boundary value.
If you need help analyzing a BSOD , as iko22 said, post in the BSOD section. There are some here who know how to make sense of it.

I appreciate your only conveying info - just I don't buy that explanation about "memory address" if it is an IRQL error: IRQL and memory address are different quantities. Confusing  (Does anyone get that??)

According to Microsoft, It means that a "kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at an invalid address while at a raised interrupt level."

So while processing an interrupt, it tried to access an address that was not valid (there can be a number of reasons it is not valid). Since it could not proceed under such conditins, it had to bugcheck to protect the system.

The naming is appropriate because the reason can be the interrupt service is trying to access memory in paged pool or pageable code and the interrupt is too high to be ble to do this kind of access.

So the-hive, have you recently updated any device drivers? Are you in the dev channel and just done an update. You could try dism to restorehealth in case there is some corruption.

@geneo is right. This is often a driver issue and most often then not from video driver. It can also be a bad memory stick or a conflict with another software.

Did you make any changes before the crash appeared?

    Love fast boots
I had to run and do something, am back, so will try to elaborate. It will be a simplification.

The OS kernel deals with pages, which are contiguous 4kB chunks of memory. There are two kinds of memory pools: page and non-paged. non-paged pages are mapped to memory that is always resident, so data or code in them can be accessed quickly. Paged memory is memory that is not always resident in physical memory. If there is a request for data that is not resident, a page fault occurs, a 4k page in physical paged-pool memory is allocated., and it is populated with the data from the appropriate file it is mapped to on disk. This is costly time wise. Non-paged pool is generally allocated at system boot by device drivers and the OS kernel.

Higher interrupt levels (IPL) can lock the system out until the interrupt is serviced by the appropriate device driver. The driver interrupt service routine for this case must execute quickly, and it would be disastrous if it had to fault a page in, therefore it is not allowed to access paged memory, only non-paged. So if an interrupt service routine is executing at a high IPL and makes an access to paged memory, the kernel bug-checks because such an access is not permitted.

The way-back machine from my device driver programming days

Thanks to all who helped, by combining all the info I was given I have worked out what caused the BSOD error IRQL not less or equal. I believe it was to do with memory at a certain action. It has happened once before in 18 months both concerning the same sort of thing. It is when I am testing a game mod and got stuck in a corner unable to move. The mod is old and felt jerky and slow and just not right sort of hesitant, so now it's deleted. All I wanted was to know, in a way I could understand was what it meant, I did not want to send logs etc. as fingers crossed it will never happen again. I have marked this as solved. Thanks again to all Sorry if I was meant to post logs but I didn't want it investigated

I know that thread is solved, however, I would add to mention that @geneo explanation is the most accurate. However, to expand on what has been mentioned already, IRQLs refer to the interrupt priority levels and certain operations can only occur at certain levels. Typically, Stop 0xA and it's cousin Stop 0xD1, are because a driver has attempted to access paged pool at an IRQL Level of 2 - commonly known as DISPATCH_LEVEL - and this is an illegal operation.

There is 15 different IRQL Levels on a x64 machine, with IRQL Level 0 to 2 being considered "Software" priority levels and 3-15 being considered as "Hardware" priorities. The operating system should always be returned to IRQL Level 0 or PASSIVE_LEVEL. If you ever experience crashes related to IRQL and you aren't able to find the problematic driver, then the best option is to enable Driver Verifier with IRQL Checking enabled.

Thank you @x BlueRobot great explanation and certainly makes sense with my Half-Life Mods. Not being into this IRQL stuff I manged to piece together bits from several people which helped me understand my problem e.g. the Mod caused the BSOD and I didn't create the mod :ROFLMAO:

Stop 0xA, for me, was always because my CPU core clock was too high or not enough Vcore, including with a Pentium E2180 (Core 2) as a result of Linpack failing.

Hi,
Usually memory timing issue on xmp profile but can also be mixed memory running at non xmp
Example adding more memory to a system so two different kits instead of one complete kit for all sticks.

Memory spec's can look the same but manufacture changes memory chips so no longer the same which will cause conflicts = bsod.
