Is it possible to turn off Antialiasing for everything in Win 11?

Hey folks,

i‘m new to this Forum, so first: Hello to everyone o/

First, a quick rundown of my prehistory: I recently had to move from Win 7 to Win 11 because i built a new PC with current Hardware that doesnt have Win 7 Drivers anymore.

Now to the problem: Win 11 does Antialiasing on everything and it looks awful. I’m a short-sighted Person and i get eye strain from that new UI within minutes. In Win 7 i could deactivate all the Antialiasing by just setting the Performance Options to: Optimize for max Performance. The moment i did this, everything became super sharp. ClearType was gone and all the UI Text was sharp too. In Win 11 this does not work anymore. ClearType is off too, but all the UI Elements including the Taskbar are still antialiased and totally blurry for my eyes. Unsuable! I must get rid of this.

What i tried so far: I disabled ClearType via Registry, unchecked Smooth Edges of Fonts, tried to replace UI Fonts in the Registry (with the Substitute Font to Segoe UI) and even tried new Monitors in 24 inch with WQHD to get more Pixel Density. Nothing helps.

So the only way would be to deactivate the Antialiasing of the whole OS. But i had no success so far. Everything i tried just partially deactivated it. But it must be removed everywhere including the Title Bars, the new System Setting Screens, the Taskbar and so on.

Do you Guys know how to do that?

All the visual effects are in Settings -> System -> Info, then click Advanced System Settings and go at the Performance tab. Uncheck all boxes and restart. If you however want to use ClearType you can configure it properly so all text is sharper. Search for ClearType. You can also download and install Winaero Tweaker which among many tweaks allows you to change the default fonts, make them larger and add bold to make them more readable. You can also increase the monitor scaling to make text more readable.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I already changed those Performance Settings - like i wrote before. This helped on Win 7 but not on Win 11 anymore.

I think you got me wrong: I dont want to improve the nasty AA on Win 11 - i want to disable it! Or at least change the way it‘s working.

To better demonstrate what i mean i‘ve attached 2 Images to this post. The first Image shows the Clock-Text on the Win 11 Taskbar on a WQHD 24 inch IPS Monitor. The second image shows the Clock-Text on the Win 7 Taskbar on a FHD 24 inch TN Monitor. In both cases the Performance Settings are set to Optimize for max Performance. Compare the result. On Win 7 - even with 1080p only - i get a razor sharp Text while on Win 11 - even in 1440p - the text is blurry like hell. Zoom in if you dont see it straight away. You will see those nasty colorized jagged edges from the Antialiasing in Win 11 which are completely over the board and cause eye strain for people like me who see very sharp at short distances.

So I need a way to make the Text in Win 11 look like it did on the second image in Win 7. In essence: This Antialiasing must be deactivated to get an exact Pixel representation again. No tools or registry settings or GPOs have helped me here. Thats my problem and this is where i need your help.

Is there a way to at least change the Antialiasing in Win 11 so that its sharper again? Do you guys have an idea?

Have you been through the Cleartype optimization? (Quick way to start it: type "cleartype" without the quotes into the search box.)

I haven't played with that, as the defaults have worked OK for me.

I'm surprised to see that Cleartype accommodates BGR displays. Our Monitor Picture Quality Tests: Text Clarity.

I think you might have mislabelled your diagrams.
The "Win11" one is far clearer than the "Win7" one.

There was a small utility to change the scaling method in Windows 10 to that of Windows 8 that gave sharper text. I don't remember how it was called, but I think you can do the same from Winaero Tweaker. Download ot and examine carefully all the tweaks to find it. You can also charge the default font size and make it bold.

PS: Just remembered, a bad graphics driver can make text look less sharp, try to also updating your graphics drivers and make sure the monitor is set to the maximum supported resolution (native). This will make text as sharp as it gets without further tweaking. If you then tweak it, even better. If the monitor is connected via analog VGA cable, press the Auto button to optimize the image.
